Anyone else suffer with heavy ones
Today I was so embarrassed I leaked thankfully I had dark trousers on
I know i should of gone to the toilet sooner but honestly haven't long changed my sanitary towel
I don't really want to take HRT sue to risks of cancer and they may not let me have it cos it's my period
I'm fine with everything else just joints ache but that's old age I guess
Age 52
I wanted to stay away from medical stuff just so I can see if my period will come to a end soon ? Wishful thinking probably
What do people suggest
Pro cons of HRT
And what else do people use / do
What age was you when they finished all together
Thank you for reading xx

I am slightly younger than you at 49. From the age of around 45 I really suffered with leaking and break through bleeding.
I went to my doctor who prescribed metafonic acid (I hope I have spelled that correctly. That did help lighten the flow but did nothing for the breakthrough bleeding. After a few months I was prescribed the mini pill. This made me bleed constantly. I was then offered a mirena coil. This may work for some. But for me I was bleeding constantly and it came out.
I finally had an ablation. I have had no problems since,
Hope this helps Flowers

I'm almost 57 and still having some periods, which can still be very heavy.

Various attempts have been made to stop mine including mirena coil, which was useless and made things even worse. I had six months of Zoladex injections (one each month) which were meant to induce a gentle menopause. That did stop my periods for just about a year but then they came back and became heavy again.

I then had a fibroid removed, which it was thought would also help things. That was in February this year. It helped for two or three months but, you've guessed it I am sure, they have now come back yet again. They are heavy and I flood badly.

I've had all types of investigation and a lot of medication, some of which worked for a while but no longer does.

The only way I can cope with them is by wearing Tena Lady adult nappies, which are very expensive and I don't like them. They do contain the huge flooding though.

I wish they'd just give me a hysterectomy to be honest. I'm getting beyond normal menopause age now and it is getting ridiculous.

Indeed.

I keep hoping that each on might be the last, but no luck so far.

Tranexamic acid has totally changed my heavy periods. So see your doctor about this option.

bobby81 · 14/06/2023 18:54

I had an ablation too, I was only 40 at the time & had fibroids. It was a year ago & honestly it's been amazing. Please don't suffer needlessly - see your doctor & discuss options because there are several things that are worth trying.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 14/06/2023 19:33

Transexamic acid worked for me.

I was flooding dreadfully though it happened gradually so only when my GP got my ferritin checked and it was on the floor, did I realise my periods weren't normal.

TXA was life changing. Plus ferrous sulphate.

Topseyt123 · 14/06/2023 19:36

I had Tranexamic Acid for some years and it did help, but for me it became less effective over time and began to mean I passed clots the size of golf balls as well as flooding.

beckslovestimmy · 15/06/2023 12:58

I had horrendous periods think largest tampon and sanitary towel being changed every hour or so for a few days. I now take mefenamic acid. I take it 3 times a day for the first 3 days of my period and it's radically changed my life. I can now easily manage the level of bleeding and means I don't have to worry about going to work or out and about on those days. I tried tranexamic acid first but didn't find it helped, it just turned my heavy bleeding into massive clots. I've read of naproxen having similar results to the Mefenamic acid too.

I have experienced menopausal flooding and been using Transexamic acid for the last 2 periods and it has helped reduce them to heavy. I’ve also worn period pants with a pad at night and not had any more leaks
