Periods restarted after 19 years!

I’m 51, have had a mirena coil for 19years, changed regularly.

I started osteogel in January (and a new coil) , as I was feeling rather low but no other symptoms of menopause.

Beginning of May had a proper period, now just had a second one. Is this normal, have others had the same?

thank you

Is your coil still in place? Tbh I would get that checked out as seems a little unusual to be regularly bleeding. Bleeding post menopause is a defo get checked and as you can't be sure where you are from the pov I would see your gp.

Thanks for replying, yes will make an appointment. Was hoping people would say that it’s completely normal and then not have to bother the gp.

I'm going to disagree with the PP a little.

I think you should see your GP BUT you don't know if you are post menopause, do you?

The Mirena often stops periods but that doesn't mean you are not ovulating or still fertile.

When women start HRT (using combined, continuous- which you are ) they often do have irregular bleeding for 6 months (often just spotting.)

So......don't immediately think this is post meno bleeding. The average age of menopause is 51 and it may be your body is having a last 'hurrah' and you will be have more estrogen anyway as you are using hrt.

I don't think we are disagreeing @JinglingSpringbells. This could be normal adjustment but the op doesn't know that and hence I think it's best to play safe and put it to the GP.

Of course you must go to the GP. Anything unusual needs checking.

Cashycashy · 02/06/2023 22:51

Afaik this is a definite sign to get checked by the GP.

Thanks for the responses, yes wondered if the ostroegel is known for causing bleeding or whether it’s the coil, which is strange after all this time and would mean not inserted correctly, possibly.

Really strange having regular (only
twice) periods after 19 years of no bleeding, it’s not spotting it’s an actually full period.

I’m 51. I’ll call the surgery next week.

Yes go and have a chat with your GP. For reassurance, my understanding is that uterine cancer does not show as full bleeding like a period, especially over 2 cycles, and is more odd spotting usually many years post-menopause. If you have had a Mirena for 19 years the chances of having cancer are extremely low.

fuckmyuteruslining · 03/06/2023 13:47

Even with post menopausal spotting 9 in 10 investigated for abnormal bleeding will not have cancer. As you can gather from my user name I've been looking in to this recently Grin pre menopause it's only 1 in 200 with abnormal bleeding.

Please see your doctor about this.
