Under active thyroid or simply post menopause

I’ve turned 60
Weight gain of 7lbs;
Finding really slow to lose; doing Slimming World.
Dry skin and eyes particularly.
Notice today, generally people in summer clothes. Me thermal vest, tunic, wool cardigan and lightweight quilted jacket: bloody freezing.
Aching joints.

Would this list suggest under active thyroid or getting older, harder to lose weight, keep warm.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Sounds like thyroid, it’s very common, I don’t know if it happens more as you get older. At my surgery you can write in on their message board for non urgent issues and then they recommend an appointment so you don’t have to do the whole 8 o’clock nonsense and just book one.
I am also still wearing my quilted gilet, that never ending wind is cold.
Also read up on what your t4 levels should be cos gps can be very liberal with leaving you on a low score because it’s not low enough but still bloody low. It’s not an expensive drug, Thyroxine, and you can ask for a low dose 50mcg to see if things improve, assuming it’s on the low side and everything else is ok. Do not mention low mood as they are likely to offer you antidepressants which will do nothing for your thyroid or lack of it.

It could be either.

You should obviously have a blood test for your thyroid then take it from there.

Don't 'accept' those symptoms as being older- you're only 60!

All of them except the feeling colder are also signs of lack of estrogen. You can still start HRT if that is something you might consider.

Many many people who have under active thyroid list fatigue as the number 1 symptom. Not just tiredness, but bone-aching utter exhaustion.

After many years of feeling much colder than anyone around me, it was the exhaustion that took me to the go - once diagnosed I realised that I ticked so many other boxes too.

Either way, gp.

Thank you for taking time to respond.

Both menopause and under active thyroid are slow progressive.

I’ll for a blood test to rule out thyroid.

HRT is out. Over sensitive to hormones. Couldn’t tolerate the pill.

Boobs really sensitive - in growth stimulation and pain. I reassure myself they’re not trying to kill me.

Make sure test is in the morning- around 9 am is a good time. What ever you can stick to if you have U.K. have another.

Don't take anything with biotin in for a week before hand (b vitamin, often in skin and hair vits.) it can affect the results

Thanks all. Am booked in next Tuesday for a blood test.

Last night so tired could have wept. Same today.

Eating much less than typical with no weight loss. So if original weight gain linked at least I’ve halted that process.

Though now I don’t know if the fatigue is because I’m not eating much.
