Hey

My mum is 53 years old and is going through the menopause

Her biggest symptoms and concern is her hot flushes and sweats. She probably has them 10-15 times a day and at night is the worst. Mum has tried taking evening primrose oil and sage which haven't worked. The GP also gave HRT Patches I believe but they haven't worked. When she has the hot flush/ sweats her body is soaking. At times when she has the flushes she runs to the toilet as she feels like she will wet herself. Before the hot flush she states that she doesn't need the toilet but whenever she gets the flush, she immediately needs the toilet and cannot hold herself!!!

Medical history wise she is hypertensive, borderline diabetic and has high cholesterol. Mum also takes tramadol for chronic back pain.

Please can you help or give some advise. She is really struggling and it's bringing her down so much.

If the HRT hasn’t helped she needs to go back to the GP, there are other options for HRT and she may find one better suited, or an increased dose may help.

Why doesn't your mum come along here and ask? (We are all very nice and helpful!)

This could be as simple as needing a higher dose of patch (they come on lots of strengths) but without 'talking to her' it's not possible to help.

@JinglingSpringbells

Mums first language isn't English so it's a shame really. This community is so supportive and I guess she needs this type support as she does feel quite alone.

As someone in her early twenties it's a shame to see mum go through the menopause and how it affects her so much.

Thank you for all your suggestions and kind words. I did tell her about this post and she was so happy and so appreciative. So thank you!

I would suggest going back to the GP. It can take a while to get the right products and the right dose.

Hi @rimx l too would strongly encourage your mum to go back to the GP. It seems the majority of people starting HRT through the NHS are started on the lowest dose of hormones (which makes perfect sense as that may be all some need), but many women need a higher dose for them to work effectively. I know this was the case for me, and many others on this thread.

Also, in the nicest possible way, l imagine that with the list of health conditions your mum has, it would massively improve her health if she lost some weight too. I’m saying this as someone who needs to shift a bit of weight myself, so no judgement here. I know it’s very difficult. You are a good daughter doing this research on your mums behalf!
