Stopping HRT suddenly

I've been on HRT since 2019.
My latest regime has been 100 patch and mirena.

I've never felt great on HRT. Had loads of bleeding issues, which forced me into getting a mirena fitted last year.

I've pretty much been through the whole range of regimes ( patches, gel, spray, tablets)

Yesterday I decided to remove my patch, it was crinkling and giving me horrid period pain and irritability.

I want to see where I'm at symptom wise and decide what I can and can't live with.

Has anyone come off HRT and been okay, or was it a big mistake and you had to quickly go back on it?

Im post menopausal.
Thanks

Also I'm worried my coil has moved! Got this pain i my abdomen and left side. I've never been able to feel the strings though. Something else to sort!

@Runaround50, joining you on the Mirena worry bench!

I have been on various types of HRT for years. Just had a hysteroscopy and polyps removed because of post menopausal bleeding, and a Mirena fitted, but I can feel any strings.

@Runaround50 There is some evidence that coming off it gradually by reducing the dose over 3+ months can stop symptoms coming back.

There is also new research (from Finland) showing that for women on HRT long term, there is a higher risk of heart disease if they stop suddenly. Prof Nick Panay discusses this on some Youtube video. (Am I confusing you with another poster or were you being treated at the Chelsea& Westminster by his team?)

Runaround50 · 02/05/2023 17:47

@bigTillyMint I expect your coil is still there. Maybe ask your Gp to check if you are feeling unsure?

@JinglingSpringbells yes, I was initially under the Panay team at ChelWest, but the service was appalling sadly.

I then managed to get a referral to Liverpool women's hospital ( closer to home ) and am under Dr Paula Briggs. She isn't a fan of large oestrogen doses anyway, but allowed me to have hrt with my historical BC diagnosis.

I just feel that I've always battled with Hrt ( bleeding / pains / irritability) .

Not sure going cold Turkey is a good idea. Have switched to lenzetto spray to see how I get on. It's a weaker product apparently. Time will tell. I do feel I need some oestrogen though.

Thanks@Runaround50 - I rang them today and first appointment I could get is a week tomorrow, so I hope you’re right!

I used Lenzetto for a while but then my GP thought I wasn’t getting enough estrogen from it and I switched to patches. It was quite easy to use.

Runaround50 · 02/05/2023 21:06

@bigTillyMint I'm sure all is well with your coil. Some women can never feel the strings apparently.

I like the ease of use with the lenzetto. However I don't think it's going to be enough oestrogen either. 3 sprays is only the equivalent to a 50 patch I think.

Thanks, @Runaround50 - a few friends have said that too!

I was on just 2 sprays!

FlyingFang · 02/05/2023 21:51

@Runaround50 did she tell you why she wasn't a fan of high oestrogen? Asking as someone on 100 patches.

Runaround50 · 03/05/2023 15:55

@FlyingFang Ive had breast cancer. Mud sticks apparently and the hrt and cancer scares from 2000's are still around.
