Is this a hot flush?

Yesterday I started feeling like there’s hotness in my cheeks. It’s like there’s a hot water bottle inside my face. I was doing something lightly strenuous at the time, but it’s carried on since then.

I’m wondering if it could be a hot flush. I’m 49 so the typical age.

However, looking online it says hot flushes only last a few minutes.

I’m not ill and haven’t done any exercise today but am still feeling an inner furnace. My skin doesn’t look red and isn’t sore. I don’t have any other menopause symptoms.

Has anyone else experienced hot flushes like this, or is this not a hot flush at all?

My hot flushes were all over. It was like my whole body was suddenly superheated and I couldn't get layers off quick enough with a bit of a panicky feeling. They went as quickly as they started.

I have had the hot face thing though - usually accompanied by cold hands. I tend to get it if I'm a bit stressed but nothing like my experience of hot flushes.

Thanks that’s useful. I do feel superheated, but it’s constant.

My hot flushes lasted more than minutes, and they were hell fire. The amount of peas and chicken nuggets that were used on my nether region and head would have restocked Iceland. Then came the freeze flush. Bloody awful.

I get all over flush/sweats. I have the fan on at work constantly and a few hand held paper fans in the office/handbag
I often wake at night and I'm really hot and sweaty ... it's not pleasant

BuffyTheCat · 01/05/2023 06:10

Mine only last a few minutes at a time but they’re quite frequent. I’m constantly taking off or replacing layers of clothing. They’re even more annoying at night because they wake me up.

Thanks all for your replies. It looks like it’s a bit of a different experience for everyone, so it’s probable that what I’m having are hot flushes. Let’s hope the process doesn’t take too long!

Mine are like a wave of heat, building from nothing but overtaking your body quite quickly. It's overwhelming.

The intensity ony lasts for minutes but it can take a wee while to restore your equilibrium.

Gingerwarthog · 02/05/2023 20:29

Mine were from the neck up only - heat radiating out from my cheeks and I could feel my face getting redder and redder. Would take ages to calm down again. I have a job that involves a lot of speaking to people and presenting and the 'fear of the flush' was a major reason for me getting HRT patches. The patches have been a game changer. No flushes.

My hot flushes only affect my feet 🤣
Seriously they are so bad I've slept on the kitchen floor a few times so my feet are cooler on the Lino 😩

Wow, I’ve never heard of that before. I think that would be worse than a hot face

Sounds like a flush, are you considering hrt at all? You don't have to be getting flushes to start it, try looking at the list of symptoms and see how many apply

lljkk · 04/05/2023 07:59

I didn't think persistent overheating was = hot flush. It's a sudden off/on thing.

Hot face cheeks happen to me after being out in cold weather (especially if high wind chill) then coming indoors, and that hot-face-thing persists for hours/even into next day. Yesterday was a cold strong breeze here.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 04/05/2023 08:02

When I had hot flushes it felt like my body was cooking from the inside out, as if each individual cell was boiling, and they lasted several minutes. They usually started about 45 minutes after I ate carbohydrates so I don't know if it had something to do with burning those off. Then I would get cold.

I haven’t considered HRT as I haven’t had any symptoms at all before this week. I suppose I’ll see whether it becomes unmanageable or not.

I’ve realised now, on day three, that it’s not constant. It seems to come then go away again. And mainly in the evenings. But not unbearable. And my face does look hot when it happens. So it’s probably early hot flushes that might get worse as things progress, or might remain at this level.
