Weight gain on Mirena

StuntNun · 26/04/2023 06:49

I had a Mirena coil fitted about 18 months ago (for heavy bleeding) and since then I've gained a pound and a half every month. My GP says the Mirena doesn't cause weight gain and won't remove it. Has anyone else experienced weight gain on the Mirena? I'd honestly rather flood every month than deal with this uncontrollable weight gain. I'm so hungry all the time. I can eat my dinner and still want another dinner even though I know I've eaten enough.

I certainly found the mirena makes my gut slow down so that I’m always a bit constipated and water-retaining, and that amounts to a stubborn two or three extra pounds. As I eat carefully and exercise very rigorously it is a bit frustrating, but I’m having a hysterectomy soon, so it will be interesting to see what happens when the mirena is finally out.

I must say that in all other respects I found it problem-free.

Any luck with GP @StuntNun ?

StuntNun · 27/06/2023 17:14

She said she would remove it when I could get a replacement source of progesterone, thanks for asking @KingIrving. Unfortunately I haven't found anywhere to fill the prescription yet.

Hope you get sorted op. My coil is ok but I put on weight with my hrt so your right. It def puts weight up. Bummer

A quick update if anyone is still following this thread. I had the Mirena removed in August and the effect was almost instant. The excessive hunger has completely subsided. I don't wake up hungry at night any more and I don't eat a full meal and then immediately want another one. I've been taking Utrogestan instead which hasn't seemed to have the same effect on my appetite. Even if it does, I'm only taking it for twelve days a month. I'm still left with the two-stone weight gain to lose but at least that feels achievable now. Whereas before I was doing my best to eat healthily and the weight just kept piling on.

I didn’t know there was a link.

I have a mirena. It was fitted in Jan. I’m not more hungry and it’s changed my life in that my debilitating periods have stopped entirely. I have however, noticed much bigger boobs which I’m not thrilled about.

Oh crap I’m having the mirena fitted today as a replacement for a copper coil I’ve had in for 7 years. Frequent anaemia through heavy bleeding and the GP has persuaded me to give the mirena a go.

I’m already struggling with weight gain as another drug I’m on increases appetite.

There isn't supposed to be a link with weight gain, it's a relatively uncommon side effect. I was one of the unlucky ones. @BillStickersIsInnocent absolutely get the Mirena. I had it for heavy bleeding as well and it made my life livable again. If it wasn't for the unexpected weight gain I would have been perfectly happy with it. I may start flooding again now it's been removed but that was the best balance for me at this point. Before I had it I used to worry that I would pass out as a I was losing so much blood.

Thank you @StuntNun that’s reassuring. I flood regularly and am often anaemic, I take iron tablets and it improves and then after the next few periods I drop again.
Hope the Mirena will improve things!

KingIrving · 12/09/2023 19:24

I am glad you were able to have it taken out @StuntNun .
Medical devices, drugs, diets, ... act differently in different persons. Some will get better, other won't. Problem is, with a pill you just stop taking it, with the Mirena, you had to fight for 3 months!

I went from the implant to the depo when I started HRT and put on more than 10kg in a few months. I was constantly hungry. It was odd because I had been in the depo for years when I was younger and easily maintained a size 6 so I assume it must be down to hormonal changes.

I have switched back to the implant and the constant hunger has gone away. I’m shrinking, slowly
