Really heavy periods, is this menopause?

I am on the depo injection and I don't normally get periods just light spotting if I am tired. Four months ago I had a horrendous period just before my injection was due. I had to change super size stuff every two hours and it was literally like a scene from a massacre! The cramps were horrendous and it lasted for two weeks.

I am now two weeks before my next injection and it has started again. Does this happen as part of peri or full menopause? Is it worth contacting my GP about it?

Yes you absolutely need to get that checked out. But you haven't said what age you are so no one can guess if it's perimenopause or not. You can get those kind of flooding periods as part of perimenopause for sure, but I don't know if it should happen if you're already on Depo.

I am in the peri menopause, self dx due to age and improvement of endometriosis pain.

I am flooding, it's dreadful.

Keep an eye on your ferritin levels and get the flooding stopped as soon as you can. I let mine go for about a year, feeling increasingly tired during period days but recovering in between. Then the last couple of months it caught up with me and I'm absolutely exhausted and finally taking iron to try to recover. On confused combination of HRT and the mini pill in hopes the progesterone will stop it. One period so far since I started the progestogen was definitely improved but it's early days. Can't have coil because of C section scar tissue.

I am 48 this year. My mum went through the menopause early and I do have some other symptoms. I up my iron when it happens anyway to be on the safe side as I have other health issues. It did stop after three days this time and I am getting my depo next week so maybe that will sort it. If this is a long term thing it will not be easy. I have enjoyed no periods for most of my adult life but don't need to catch up now!

Yes probably perimenopause then. Do say it to the doctor, maybe they can give you the Depo more often? Or add more progesterone to it for the last few weeks before the injection is due or something? The coil is supposed to be very good for stopping it too if you can use it. Dealing with it long term is just a guarantee you'll end up anaemic until periods actually stop.
