Removal of merina too painful

Ahrightsoted · 19/04/2023 16:36

Yesterday I was booked with my gp to have my coil removed and replaced but it was so painful even before she tried to remove it. She had two goes in placing the speculum but the pain was unbearable. Now up to this point I've never had any problems, the coil was fitted during a hsteroscopy 5 years ago and that wasn't a problem. Also all of my smears have been fine. I had 10 ivf goes previously so am well used to being man handled.
She said I looked red and inflamed and this could be due to low estrogen levels. My hrt patch prescription has been increased I've been given a course of estrogen pessaries to take as well, second attempt is in may.
Has anyone had any experience of this and if so what happened. Felt quite traumatised about it tbh

I had mine taken out when it was infected! Absolute agony. Gave me some cocodamol after it though so that was alright...

👋 Hi Op
I found inserting the mirer coil incredibly painful I allmost fainted

Doctor was just measuring me inside to know which mirer coil size to fit in,
And i was squeezing my hand really hard,in a tight fist,

I had to sit down as I was giddy and out of balance too

I found the first time taking out the coil straight forward
Which was weird as I was expecting it to be just as bad , as having it put in

I would ask for effective some pain relief

Ahrightsoted · 19/04/2023 16:51

Inserting it was fine so I never thought for a minute removing would be a problem. I guessed there would be some uncomfortable moments Blush so took some ibruphen an hour before. As soon as she put the speculum it the pain was awful... a burning stinging pain and she hadn't even touched the coil.
Maybe I will call them the wk before and ask if they gave prescribe me a few strong painkillers.
Just off to google if it can stay in FOREVER Confused

Vaginal estradiol is definitely worth a go.

Make sure you do the every day for 2 weeks thing.

It is a tiny amount (there used to be a 50 version as well as the 10) so don't be afraid to ask for more if you find you need it when you get to the twice a week stage.

Ahrightsoted · 19/04/2023 16:55

My appointment is on the 10th of may and as well as upping my patches she has given me vagiferm 10 micrograms... 24 tabs
So if I take one every day I'll have enough to double up for a few days before

Oh no 🙈 I've just booked an appointment to get mine removed and a new one inserted and dreading it as it was painful when inserted the first time. Hope the meds you've described make your May appointment more comfortable!

General anaesthetic for me

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/04/2023 18:25

Mines been in for 7 years! Due to have it out Dec 2019 but it wouldn't move without pain - had to be referred to hospital. March 2020. So stayed out for another couple of years and I haven't got round to it again!

SoggyGround · 19/04/2023 19:10

@Pieceofpurplesky ooh you've made me feel better as mine has been in for over 6 years as I've been putting off!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 19/04/2023 19:19

OP it does sound like a vaginal atrophy related thing rather than your cervix being too difficult.

Have a look on the menopause board for info on using vaginal estrogen.

I didn't realise I had vaginal atrophy until I started having urinary incontinence, but after three months of vaginal estrogen and HRT I have gone from weeing about 12 times a day to 5ish times and I sleep through the night without weeing.

So the tissues in the vagina can get very sore and thin and inflamed.

I hope this works for you.

Theunamedcat · 19/04/2023 19:21

I've known people who need to be knocked out for it

Sundaefraise · 19/04/2023 19:24

Does anyone know if there is anything they can give you to either help with the pain or calm you down short of a general anaesthetic? - I've had loads of procedures, but I found this utterly traumatic and was shaking for hours after.

Paperdolly · 19/04/2023 19:48

Mine was put in during another procedure so I was under general anaesthetic. After a couple of years I asked for them to remove it. As although it had stopped my menopausal flooding it never felt part of me. Removal was an awful experience and I shouted a couple of words out loud that I’m ashamed to tell you what they were. I’d ask to be numbed either in that area or generally.

Yes she def said the word atrophy! No problem getting it in, it was just as it hit the top part was when the pain was unbearable.
Fingers crossed the pessaries helps

I had a similar problem
Saw a private consultant she removed it. Numbed down below with local anaesthetic
Scan confirmed two small fibroids had created the problem
No issues since
Good luck

Ahrightsoted · 10/05/2023 06:58

I had my appt yesterday and can thankfully say it was a success 😀
Speculum went in no probs and I didn't even feel the old one coming out. The new one going in was a little stingy but not uncomfortable
The pessaries and stronger patches did the trick
