Could this be lack of oestrogen or something else?

Lichen sclerosis is common in menopause. That kind of burns. As does vaginal atrophy. book an appointment with the GP for an examination-easier said than done I know!

Start by assuming it is loss of estrogen and ask for Ovestin cream to apply on the spot where it's sore.

LC is rarer and usually needs a dermatologist to diagnose - GPs are a bit out of their depth on this one. LC eventually presents as white patches, not redness. [[https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/lichen-sclerosus/

It also needs a very expert eye to see vaginal atrophy (which includes the perineum not just internally.) Estrogen cream is so weak and safe that it's fine to start with it and see if it helps. Be aware the treatment can sting initially (for a little while, but it will stop once your skin gets used to it and improves.)
