Delaying period on HRT

I’m peri-menopausal. Taking 2 pumps of estrogel a day and 2 x 100mg of Utrogestan for last 14 days of cycle.

All is going very well, except my periods tend to be heavy.

I’m going on holiday and wondering if I can alter when I take my Utrogestan to delay my period for a week and how I am best to do this. Should I take some extra for some days at the end of my 14 day period or delay starting to take the Utrogestan so I start it on day 22?

Any help greatly appreciated!

I'm only 45 so it may he different for you but my periods will still come when they want, no matter when I take the progesterone.

Hope someone is along with a better answer for you!

Thanks Vintage, mine were like that at the start but less so now.

I've been taking them for a year and my periods still do not line up with the Pg. I am currently on a 42 ish day cycle but take the Pg from 25 the if each month. Makes absolutely no difference. I don't get a withdrawal bleed. My period does what it wants to do. It's a pita.

Accidentally last month, I forgot to take my Utrogestan one night at the point where I start spotting (but still due to take the pills for another few days) and I triggered a heavy bleed. I’d always wondered if I’d started using Utrogestan correctly as I’d started taking it the day I received my prescription but I’ve read about people taking it for day 15-28 of the month, so I decided to treat that day as the start of my period and counted 15 days before taking Utrogestan again.

This month, I still spotted early but overall I have managed to shunt my period cycle forward a few days - which is a benefit as we are off on a beach holiday when I was due to have a period in April but now there won’t be a crossover.

I’m not sure of the medical consequences, and I will talk again to my doctor about the best way I should be taking it given my age, but this has been my experience.

Have you considered having a Mirena coil fitted. They are used in HRT to deliver the dose of progesterone directly to the womb lining. Probably no good for you holiday but longterm they get rid of periods and can be used as HRT for up to four years.
I sailed through peri menopause with Mirena and eventually added in oestrogen patches when I hit menopause proper.
Unfortunately I had to come off it all when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The positive side is that the Anastrazole I now take obliterate oestrogen and progesterone and I no longer have menopause symptoms. There are some unpleasant side effects but so much easier to deal with now I don’t have wildly fluctuating hormones.
Post menopause is like entering a beautiful calm sea after being battered by endless stormy weather. Contrary to popular belief, HRT cold Turkey is very short lived.

@Dirtystreetpie You can do either.

Ah that sounds like heaven @angrymum22, I'm sorry you had to be so I'll to get there.

Hi @Dirtystreetpie i wonder if you had any symptoms delaying your progesterone?

I want to delay starting mine for two weeks so that I'm able to have a decent holiday.

I did mention a longer cycle to my GP but she wasn't aware of the Nice guidelines. Presumably if NICE say you can use progesterone every three months, delaying starting for a fortnight won't have any long term effects on me?

Hi, I had no side effects and it worked well and did what I hoped it would

Hi, I've just come across this thread while looking for similar advice. Hoping you're still on here @Dirtystreetpie !

What was it that worked for you, did you start taking extra, or did you delay taking them?
