Hi, I have an older sister who has just gone through the menopause with no symptoms. I am wondering if you knew if no symptoms means that’s it, definitely will be no appearance of symptoms a few years later after menopause? Also does no symptoms mean less likely to get other problems related to loss of estrogen, such as osteoporosis? I tried googling but couldn’t find any info. Thanks

I'm late fifties, and haven't had a period for probably 5 years now - have never had any menopause symptoms. My sister who is 6 years older than me was the same, as was my mum. Only mild inconvenience was I sometimes have insomnia and can't get to sleep but I can live with that!

I had two periods that were heavier than usual, a couple of hot flushes. Periods stopped after the two heavier periods and had no symptoms at all after. Ten years now was a breeze. Had been dreading it as had suffered with PND but it was completely painless.

Wow that’s good to know. Maybe I will follow my sisters menopause experience. Should count ourselves lucky if we get away with no symptoms from the menopause

I've had hardly any, my periods just pretty much stopped. I've had a few night sweats and that was it. I was really surprised as my periods & hormones were awful throughout.

Doggydooda · 10/03/2023 11:42

All I had were heavy periods for a few months and that was it. It never crossed my mind to speak to Dr / Nurse . I was mid to late 40s …such a non event that I really cannot remember specific dates etc .

Bekindbekind · 10/03/2023 11:42

Some people really do have no symptoms. I’ve had a few weeks of hot flushes and am feeling cheated as close relatives had nothing! 😂

MyOwnSpace · 10/03/2023 11:47

But does having no symptoms mean no other problems related to loss of estrogen? Such as osteoporosis etc etc

There doesn't seem to be much

Less hot flushes is correlated to lower chance of dementia in sone studies

I don't recall anything relate to osteoporosis- if there is an family history , I'd def look into hrt. If not and you have good diet and lots of calcium and strength if exercises then I haven't

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 10/03/2023 13:36

Having no symptoms doesn't mean no osteoporosis down the road, unfortunately. Estrogen still drops regardless of how you experience menopause.

It was a complete non-event for me, same for my older sister. Bone scans have been fine, whether due to genetics/lifting weights for decades/luck I couldn't say.

TheHouseNextDoor · 10/03/2023 13:47

My periods stopped at 41. Absolutely nothing since.

There is no relationship between no symptoms and no long term health issues.

FWIW, two friends of mine had no symptoms, menopause on the early side, and both have now had fractures and got osteoporosis in their 50s.

The only way to prevent osteoporosis is to have bone density scans and catch loss of bone early, so you can take action.

1 in 2 women will develop it.

Ah that’s interesting. Will definitely have to be more aware of health risks after menopause. Thanks @JinglingSpringbells and @GulfCoastBeachGirl

People are all different with hormones. Periods were never a big deal for me - didn't make me moody or bloated or painful boobs or anything at all. Just had to catch the blood. Menopause however, fucked me to hell.

Regardless of symptoms, women are going to have to be infertile by the time they reach a certain age. Nobody is their 60s is ovulating presumably. Oestrogen will decline and that will impact the body. Osteoporosis depends on your genes IMO. I had a premature menopause, which is completely done (verified by blood) and my bone density scan came back with bones denser than average for my age (which was early 40s - so most of the people I was being compared with were not even menopausal).

Youdoyoubabe · 11/03/2023 00:03

The only symptoms of the menopause are that your periods stop. The rest is just being a middle aged woman.
