Ache so badly after exercise

I have always exercised in one way or other.
Up until a few years ago (nearly 50), I was walking the dogs for miles, using my treadmill daily, lifted light weights, did yoga/stretching routines daily too.
However, recently I can only seem to manage my daily dog walks, anything else leaves me hurting.
I really want to tone up and get some strength training in every week but every time I try I end up in so much discomfort and for weeks after too.
Last week, I dug out my old yoga dvd which I used to do every day with ease. I only did the 15 min gentle routine for 5 days and have spent the next 5 aching like mad (especially my lower back and hips).
Whenever I get the weights out I end up in pain too.
Is this a peri thing? What is happening?

Completely blatant placemark because I have a similar problem! Are you taking any medication? Are you still getting periods? Mine seem to be suddenly light so presumably a hormonal change in the last 3 months which coincides perfectly with pain in the hips and lower back!

Yeah it's another one of the joys. You produce less collagen, and collagen major part of you ligaments and joints. I had to stop running when I hit peri.

HRT made it much more comfortable, and now I take a daily collagen supplement and I think maybe that helps. I'm lifting weights and doing yoga regularly, although undoubtedly I do need a bit of extra recovery time.

I’m not taking anything atm user15297345, my periods are very very light but that’s only because I’ve had an ablation.
Fluckle I need to try hrt

Definitely try HRT. Especially testosterone is meant to help with muscle recovery.

I find that if I have a break from exercise I get DOMS, but if I do it regularly I just don’t get it any more. So maybe just build up, slow and steady. But if you feel the pain is not a normal reaction to exercise maybe go to your GP.

I would also second Collagen, I noticed a difference with my joint pain within days of using it. I would go as far as saying it’s the only supplement that I’ve ever used where I have noticed a difference.

This is me!

You need HRT. I notice myself getting creaky is I forget to change my patch. It will take 10 years off you movement wise.

bigdecisionaboutwork · 03/03/2023 06:56

I'm 53 and when I was running 3 yrs ago I was taking ibuprofen afterwards once or twice a week. I now take turmeric and black pepper supplements - cheap as chips and available in Boots and Holland & Barrett - and no need for painkillers at all. I know a couple of people who use it for arthritis, including my 78 yr old dad, and it works for them too.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 03/03/2023 06:56

Sounds like you need a hormonal check and maybe some supplements. JJ Virgin is brilliant. Have a listen / read as she was in exactly the same position at your age and tells her story of how she fixed it.

AreYouShittingMe · 03/03/2023 07:15

Another one here- HRT sorted me out! No joint pain anymore. I thought it was the drop in Estrogen that caused the joint pain?

hothands · 03/03/2023 07:26

I have this problem too. I went through early menopause and was prescribed HRT but as I'm nearing 50, any kind of exercise is making me ache like a bastard. I feel like I'm about 90 years old. Can anyone in the know tell me if I need to ask the dr to up my HRT dose? Would it help?

Summerhillsquare · 03/03/2023 08:12

I tried swimming, helps tremendously and you can't really injure yourself. Inside, with a nice hot sauna also helps 😁

Catspyjamas17 · 03/03/2023 08:17

HRT definitely. This hasn't happened to me yet but it did to my super fit yoga teacher in her 50s. She tried all the natural remedies first but eventually started having HRT - it was oestrogen which helped.

vjg13 · 03/03/2023 13:35

I have been taking collagen for a while but it was definitely HRT that improved my joint pain and within a few weeks of starting it.
