A stupid question about HRT and periods

BatFaceOwl · 02/03/2023 08:05

I started HRT nearly 2 weeks ago. I couldn't time this with my cycle as in the last month or two it's gone haywire and my usual 28 days on the dot has gone (not surprising as I'm 51)

I also started the utrogestan at the same time as I wasn't sleeping at all.

So I've had 12 days of gel and my 12 days of utrogestan to date

This morning I've come on. I'm nearly 4 weeks late (or have skipped a period, who knows?)

Anyway - for some reason I didn't think my period could come whilst on the utrogestan.

Can anyone explain how it works please? Thank you

The utrogestan makes you have ' a bleed'.

Usually you take the estradiol for two weeks then the utrogestan for two weeks to make the lining of the uterus come away.

So the utrogestan has done the job it's supposed to do for you.

Also, my bleed always starts on day 8 or 9 of the utrogestan.

I find it a massive relief as my breasts go back to normal, the bloating disappears and I have more energy.

Then the two week build up of oestrogen again...

What were you expecting @BatFaceOwl ?

As Pp says, the bleed follows the last dose of Utrogestan but usually 3-4 days later. Early bleeds are often your own cycle breaking through or not enough Utrogestan being absorbed.

TBH in the first few months of any HRT, you've got to expect anything happening with bleeds and periods. It can take a while to get into a pattern.

@JinglingSpringbells not sure what I was expecting tbh!

I know I shouldn't have started them both together but did so as my sleep had been so rubbish.

You did nothing wrong!

You can't always follow a cycle in peri anyway.

Many consultants advise on starting both at the same time and it will create an HRT cycle.

Some suggest choosing the 1st of the month for Utrogestan and sticking with it, regardless.
