This is what I've been prescribed. It I'm not quite sure it's correct. Is the oestrogel dosage right or should it be two pumps?

I'm 51 with periods still

I know the very obvious answer is to speak to my GP of course but as she asked me how much I'd like to be prescribed as she wasn't too sure and was I aware of all the breast cancer risks, I'm not filled with confidence!

Thanks in advance

They often start on one. When is your medication review ?

SauteedOwl · 15/02/2023 14:45

@KangarooKenny thanks! No review has been mentioned. However i now belong to a practice that is in special measures so I'm sure that medicine reviews will be far down on their list!

@SauteedOwl I'm 51 and on the same HRT. I take one capsule of Utrogestan 100mg an hour before bed and apply one pump of Estrogel to shoulders at the same time (most use 2 pumps but 1 has been enough to stop the dreaded night sweats) I was also told its important to take the Cerazette mini pill daily for 'womb health '

SouthCoastShell · 15/02/2023 15:09

I should add that my Dr suggested I can take 1 Utrogestan EVERY day of the month without a break as I don't want a bleed and they help me get a decent night's sleep.

Coraline353 · 15/02/2023 15:12

I've started with one pump for now.

Check the utogestran one though as it's not days 1-12 of your cycle. It's from day 15 of your cycle for 12 days. Have a read of the leaflet which explains it.

SauteedOwl · 15/02/2023 15:40

@SouthCoastShell see my friend was told it was crucial she came off the mini pill as it would lead to too much progesterone

I don't like all this. I wish it was clearer

@Coraline353 I would have zero idea of where I am in my cycle - does this matter? Only because my periods have now decided to go haywire after 35 years of them being perfect!

Past three months - who knows when it might turn up

Ha. Mine were the same when I started. I was waiting to figure out when day 1 was! I got to about day 75 and gave up. I had vague cramps and the slightest hint of blood that day and merrily decided it was day 1 and counted from there. I did get amazing advice on the from a menopause consultant on Peppy (my health insurance gives me access) so felt secure I was doing the right thing. I then went to day 15 and started taking the utogestran.

JinglingSpringbells · 15/02/2023 16:31

The normal dose is 2 pumps.

However, many specialists advise starting on 1 pump and gradually increasing.

The whole point of gel is to use the amount needed to control symptoms. That's why it's so much better than tablets or patches because you can decide on what works for you.

You don't really need your GP's permission unless there is very special medical reason for a low dose.
1 pump is the same as a 25mgs patch (low dose.)
It's less than in a low-dose 1mg tablets.

What?

Too much progesterone for what?

SauteedOwl · 15/02/2023 16:43

@JinglingSpringbells thank you for that. I've decided to use one pump and see how that goes. And I'll take the tablets in a couple of weeks.

Yes, she was on the mini pill and had been for years. GP said she couldn't take utrogestan along with being on the mini pill - I think her pill was a POP one though?

@SauteedOwl I had to come off the Combined pill in and change to mini pill in order to take HRT perhaps that what your friend meant?
