Utrogestan

Freddyford · 12/02/2023 21:09

Been taking oestrogel and ugesteran since September 2022 Hrt tablet to protect my womb because of endometriosis. I am in the menopause aged 50

Had issues with the ugesteran stopped it my GP said that she would not give me the oestrogel unless I took the ugesteran so tried it again

Experiencing the following

Tiredness, drained, no energy, spotting, urinating loads and water infections, nausea, dizzy, sleep problems, eyes feel swollen in a morning, tummy cramps, feel inflamed in my tummy, feel like been stung by millions of wasps inside my tummy, pain across shoulder blades and in my back, no appetite

Anyone else had any problems please

Thank you so much for your help greatly appreciated

Try it vaginally, many women tolerate it much better. It isn't licensed for that administration but fairly commonly used this way.

If not then ask for a phone consult, perhaps ask for a mirena coil or try patches with a different form of progesterone?

The tiredness etc with urinary issues sound like typical meno issues so definitely try and carry on even with a different prescription if it is unbearable.

Possibly progesterone intolerance

Unfortunately, it seems that Utrogestan has become the default progesterone along with Oestrogel.

Yes, it may be safer for women using it long-term ( 5+ years) but for women on HRT only short term, there are many other types that are safe.

This combination does not suit all women on HRT! It seems that GPs now are just following another 'rule' and can't think outside of that.

There are many other types @Freddyford

There are 4 types of progesterone/progestogen you could use.
Utrogestan is one of them.

I'd speak to your dr and ask to try other types- patches, or the tablet form Femoston (which is as safe as Utrogestan long-term.)

Try it vaginally, same dose. That's what my GP advised me to do and it's helped me.

I find it better taking one a night every night rather than 2 a night for 2 weeks then two weeks off.
Always as night tho.

Good morning sweetie how are you all feeling today.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me greatly appreciated

I am a bit complicated because of my endometriosis

Stopped the oestrogel and ugesteran and I am feeling a little better

I am still not feeling great but I am at work. Saw the Doctor this morning she said to try and persevere with the hrt tablet as it might improve could only offer me no hrt at all. The coil with my HRT gel or try patches. I opted for the patches anything is better than feeling like this. Thanks for all your kindness and support means the world to me.

Freddyford x

I switched to the patches as I cannot tolerate Utrogestan at all.

I'm not the biggest fan ( I think the oral form suits me best but I'm not "allowed" it any more) but it's better than nothing.

@cleowasmycat You put a ? by 'short term'.

Not sure what you are asking, but generally speaking, HRT used up to 5 years would be considered short term and most of the research shows no increased risk in breast cancer using it for 5 years.

Medium and longer term would be 10,15, 20 years and longer.

Thanks, I really meant there isn't much evidence to suggest a need to come off HRT as our bodies won't start reproducing oestrogen. The HRT protects bone density and brain health.
