Sleep!

I haven’t had a period for 8 or 9 months now so definitely menopausal. For the past few months my sleep has been awful. I fall asleep quickly but then wake an hour or two later and often struggle to get back to sleep or keep wakening up throughout the night. Thinking of phoning the GP but I doubt they would give me anything? Has anyone else had success with this?

Hi - sorry to hear you're suffering with your sleep. Yes, this happened to me too - still happens! I did find that as I progressed into menopause and settled into taking HRT, my sleep did improve. The progesterone part helps you sleep I believe.

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 08/02/2023 00:31

Magnesium has made a huge difference to my sleep… as well as limiting myself to 1 coffee a day in the morning. 😩

HedgehogPrincess · 08/02/2023 01:40

Definitely see your GP, HRT should help with sleep, also Vitamin C up to the max daily amount if you can tolerate it.

BobaTea · 10/02/2023 21:50

I was same as you, op. I fell asleep quickly and then woke up after an hour. Stayed awake for the next three hours.

But my sleep have improved now that I'm taking magnesium before bed. I now stay asleep throughout the night and no more restless legs! If I do wake up in the middle of night I fall back to sleep within minutes.

Try magnesium. It really do help.

Vallmo47 · 10/02/2023 21:52

Not going through these joys just yet OP but the only thing that has helped my sleep issues is exercise. I hope you get help!

KangarooKenny · 10/02/2023 21:52

Another one to say magnesium.
And if I’ve had a run of bad nights I treat myself to an antihistamine.

Teeshirt · 10/02/2023 21:55

I really struggle. Magnesium helps. I can’t take HRT.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 10/02/2023 21:57

I have hrt which helps and magnesium but the best by far as recommended by Davina Kirkland's Sleep Aid ⛑️ is is amazing and I have had insomnia for decades.

Susieblue18 · 12/02/2023 22:40

Thanks everyone, I’ll definitely start magnesium and have a look at Davina Kirkland’s sleep aid.

How long does magnesium take to work? I’m having similar issues and a week in it’s not really helping 🙄

I tried these years ago and they knocked me out. I'd ease yourself into them.

Apparently there are different types of magnesium. If one doesn't work then try another but be aware some types cause digestive issues. I usually give any medication at least a month to see if it helps but drs usually recommend three months.

Snowdropsarelovely · 12/02/2023 23:02

Following with interest! Can anyone recommend a particular type of magnesium? And what dose should I take? Thanks

KangarooKenny · 13/02/2023 06:54

Aim for 500mg a day

Sleep!
BobaTea · 13/02/2023 09:26

@KangarooKenny , is that 500mg elemental magnesium?

The one I'm taking is magnesium taurate 700mg, providing magnesium 112mg.

Yes, elemental, which I’m finding hard to achieve !

BobaTea · 13/02/2023 11:07

@KangarooKenny , wow so I have to take four tablets. The bottle says take a tablet a say and do not exceed the recommended daily amount so I only take one or two tablets a day.

I take it for sleep and also palpitations. Do you find magnesium helps with your palpitations too? How many tablets do you take a day?

I don’t use them for palpitations, I only ever had them when my ferritin was low.
I take L-Threonate, 4 tablets, which is 160mg of elemental magnesium, and that helps me sleep. I use that one as it crosses into the brain and helps me with meno brain. I might add in another type to up what I’m getting.
I also have Epsom salt baths a couple of times a week for more magnesium.
If you don’t want to take that many tablets you could try a spray or lotion.

AKASheilaTheGreat · 13/02/2023 11:45

I'm 51 and experiencing exactly this. I've been a little reluctant to take HRT even though I've been prescribed it and I'm up to speed on all the current advice and studies etc

So I've decided I'll start taking it and see how that goes

As to the current sleep issues ... I take a Boots Sleepeze from time to time - not the herbal stuff! Doesn't leave a hangover effect the next day

I also have regular Epsom salt baths - just dump the whole bag in and soak for half an hour. Magnesium body lotion and spray sometimes

Oh and don't laugh but two bars of ivory soap at the foot of the bed. Has to be the ivory soap though! Imperial leather will do

I'm also lucky enough to have a lovely husband who will go and sleep in our guest room at the moment - I just need some space sometimes as I toss and turn etc and this helps until I can get on top of this
