Still having regular periods at 54

I am 54 and still having regular periods. I have endometriosis so they are painful but not particularly long anymore. Surely this must be coming to an end , I am tempted to go the doctors for a check up , I do feel very low before my period each month but that's how it's always been for me. It feels very old to be still having regular periods at 54.

My mum had periods until 54, it's late ish but not very unusual I think? The average age is 51, and some women are much earlier than that, so for the average to work out to 51 there must be many women like you.

Thanks for replying, how was menopause for your mom when it came? At what age did her periods stop?

Sorry to tell you that I was 56 when my periods stopped. It's annoying, but I don't understand why it's any reason to see a doctor. Maybe it will help reduce the likelihood of osteoporosis in the future - who knows?

Alwaysworryingoversomething · 06/02/2023 18:58

I'm nearly 54 and mine are still happening. I'm sick of it, but I don't think there's anything to be done about it.

Thiswaytothesummer · 06/02/2023 19:02

You may be right, @Hbh17 but I am starting to feel very old to be still having monthly periods.
How was menopausal for you when it came at 56?

Ugh OP and everyone else. What a total bummer - after all those years, you're due some respite 😞

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/02/2023 19:11

I don’t think it’s that unusual, sorry. But it shouldn’t be too long.

DorisParchment · 06/02/2023 19:13

Mine stopped suddenly when I was 54. I’d been regular as clockwork, cramps, vomiting, migraines, and they just stopped one day and that was it. Blessed relief. And no menopausal symptoms whatsoever.

Thiswaytothesummer · 06/02/2023 19:15

Thank you @CloudPop , it's been very tough dealing with endometrial all these years. I am very much looking forward to the end.

Another one still going strong at a few months short of 55. Also rather fed up now but appreciate the bone health aspects

Thiswaytothesummer · 06/02/2023 19:16

@DorisParchment this give me hope.

I’m 56 (nearly 57) and regular periods only stopped about 18 months ago, and last period now was about 6 months ago. So far it’s just been hot flashes for the last couple of months and a bit of anxiety.

AnuSTart · 06/02/2023 19:17

Apparently my mother and grandmother were both 54. I'm 50 and they're still every 28 days like bloody clockwork. I feel for you. I can't wait to wave goodbye to them though I do worry about other things coming after.

Nonimai · 06/02/2023 19:20

I’m nearly 56 and have had regular periods since I was 10. I went to the GP last year and mentioned it. They said it was normal. My mum still had periods at 60 - maybe it’s genetic.

Thiswaytothesummer · 06/02/2023 19:30

I also started early @Nonimai which I thought meant they would end early but obviously not. My mom passed away very young ( before I got my periods) so I don't know my family history.
It could be genetic as with you.

@AnuSTart hoping we will be lucky, I know it's very hard for so many women.

@WarningToTheCurious I hope you don't suffer too much, maybe your through the worst.

My mum was 55 OP. She also started early (age 11).

Thiswaytothesummer · 06/02/2023 19:50

@2crossedout1 I did think it may mean they stopped earlier but I am obviously wrong. I don’t know where I got that from.

I'm glad that I found this thread, I thought it was just me. I was 54 last October and have had erratic periods since 2019. It's very annoying,I can go up to 5 months without one,get my hopes up then the period from hell descends.
I had one in May,nothing until October, then January, now another one. Mine were never painful or heavy, but they are now,it's like they've saved themselves up and I'm getting all at once. I'm pretty fed up with it as it's currently so heavy that I'm sleeping on a towel.
Mine started at 11,and I had years of infertility until my body suddenly decided that it could get pregnant and did so 3 times very quickly. I'm guessing that my reproductive system just doesn't like playing by the rules.
