Utrogestan vs Provera

Howlongtillwegetthere · 20/01/2023 11:21

I have just picked up a prescription for HRT. I have been taking Utrogestan, and the prescription says Utrogestan, but I have been given Provera - is it the same thing?

No idea but I am currently on Provera to stem a very long period. Is Provera HRT then?

JinglingSpringbells · 20/01/2023 16:10

Google or the patient leaflets (online) have the ingredients of all drugs.

confusedlots · 20/01/2023 16:14

It's a different progesterone, but works in the same way. There is a big shortage of utrogestan at the minute so lots of people are having to be switched to Provera as an alternative

Howlongtillwegetthere · 20/01/2023 16:45

Thank you

It's progesterone, which you need to take alongside HRT

Do you mind me asking what dose you were prescribed?

Mine is 2.5mg but I have googled and I think it should be higher than this as I'm on a 75 patch. My doctor won't engage about my query!

Thanks!

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 26/01/2023 13:46

@Movinghouseatlast I would raise this with the pharmacist who dispensed it. They should query with the prescriber on your behalf.

Ravageur · 27/01/2023 12:15

I've just been prescribed provera 5mg per day alongside 100mcg patch as I can't get utrogestan for love nor money. Bloody nightmare! (Literally)

how did you get on with it op?

Carlycat · 27/01/2023 12:21

utrogestan is body identical.
Provera is the synthetic equivalent
Utrogestan can cause drowsiness at night so good for insomnia
I take provera as it's vegan friendly

JinglingSpringbells · 27/01/2023 12:28

Provera is a synthetic type of progestogen and is the same as MPA which is in some HRT tablets.

Provera 10 mg Tablets - Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) - (emc)www.medicines.org.uk › emc › product › pil
Provera contains the active substance medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is one of a group of medicines called 'progestogens'

@Carlycat why is Utrogestan not vegan friendly?

Ravageur · 27/01/2023 12:34

Probably has gelatin in it. I hope it doesn't upset me I guess as I've been fine on utrogestan and hate change haha. I do wee a lot with utrogestan so wouldn't mind an absence of that!

ninja · 22/02/2023 09:48

I've just collected provers and they've put me on a 10mg dose (14 days of the month).

I'm hoping that's right

SilentHedges · 23/02/2023 20:55

I couldn't get hold of Utrogestan 100 last week, no one knows when it's coming back in stock. I need to take it alongside my Evorel 75 patches. So I requested online through my patient app (impossible to speak to my doctor) they they prescribe me Provera as an alternative. The doctor has refused? What happens now, for I have to stop my patches and HRT completely? I'm understandably upset 😡

Ihavedogs · 23/02/2023 22:38

@SilentHedges your GP should be prescribing an alternative as you should not be taking oestrogen without taking a progesterone. This should be followed up with the practice.

FWIW supplies of utrogestan are now starting to to hit pharmacies. I collected some this morning and the pharmacy said that they unexpectedly received a supply yesterday. It may be worth checking with local pharmacies again to see if you can source any.

Thank you @Ihavedogs If I shouldn't take Estrogen without Progesterone, then I'm pretty shocked my request for an alternative Progesterone was just refused with no explanation. I will follow this up with the Practice, as its not right.

You've given me some hope, and I'll try the Pharmacy's again tomorrow.

If you have a womb, progesterone is required to stop thickening of the womb when taking oestrogen. Normally with utrogestan you would normally take 100mg daily if post menopausal or 200mg 12-14 days each month.

@Ihavedogs Thank you for taking the time to post this info. I'm failry new to this. 53, take mini pill to halt painful periods, which I still have, so peri I guess. Everol 75, plus Utrogestan daily. I hope that's right, I'll read the link to understand this better.

In separate news my pharmacy says Utrogestan will start to be in stock next week, the week after at worst.

Takemehomeagain · 28/02/2023 23:08

Using the Boots prescription stock checker it looks like it's back in stock in my area. You need to type in generic...Progesterone 100mg capt

Just wondering how you got on with Provera as I’ve just been given it as an alternative to Utrogestan. I keep reading negative reviews so hoping someone might tell me they got on ok with it!

I've been using Provera for the past month because of the Utrogestan shortage. It's been completely fine. In fact, suits me better than Utrogestan as that usually makes me feel quite rough for the first few days of taking it (I'm in peri so don't take it every day of the month) whereas Provera has had zero side effects.

I have concerns that it's not bio-identical like Utrogestan as I'm high risk for breast cancer already and taking HRT increases my risk further (for my specific circumstances) but my peri symptoms have been so debilitating that I had to make a hard decision to accept the increased risk in order to keep my job (and income!). It really sucks being at woman at times.

Lisa6171 · 24/05/2023 06:30

+1 Provera. I missed my period for 3 months and was very worried and didn’t know what was going on in my system but after Provera for 10 days I didn’t start my period. But then after another 5 days my period just started. Just have patience after taking this drug - it really effective. I hope this helps someone - https://healthful-online.com/c2831/provera.html

EttyC · 25/05/2023 00:39

Thank you for this, I had the same concerns about it not being a natural progesterone. Hoping I get on ok with it

Mushk · 31/05/2023 19:50

Hi all i was wondering if you could help me.i was px progesterone tablets last Friday along with the gel for menopause symptoms. The tablets are out of stock as manufacturers problem. I went back to my surgery and the receptionist sent a message over to the gp and promised they would phone me back. They never phoned and left me waiting till after the bank Holiday. The gp has now px provera. My question is should i be taking this alongside the gel as they haven't px this again? Thank you so much x

Luv2Travel · 21/11/2023 17:51

Just to add if you are given Provera, this cannot be taken internally ( as a pessary) like the Utrogestan. Did anyone find out if Provera OK for people who are prone to Breast cancer? I read that this can be taken after menopause to help breast cancer? My friend who had breast cancer was told to stay away from all hormone tablets.
