Heavy, painful bleed - any good tips for managing

I know I'm relatively lucky to get to 48 without having had a really heavy and painful period but I've never had so much discomfort from a period!

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong and it's just part of perimenopause.

I'd really appreciate any tips on OTC pain medication or even anything topical or herbal that women find helpful? I really need something non drowsy too.

Thank you

A sudden, significant change should probably be checked out by a GP. No advice on management apart from ibuprofen. Sympathies.

Nurofen plus. It has the added benefit of containing ibuprofen. Did you know that anti inflammatories such as ibuprofen reduce the amount of bleeding by 30% during a period because they suppress prostaglandin production which causes uterine shedding.

Thanks for fast replies.

Unfortunately I can't use ibuprofen as I'm asthmatic. Would have mentioned that earlier if I'd known ibuprofen was helpful to some.

Also in case it helps I don't have many clots as far as I can see. Just having to frequently empty mooncup, like every few hours.

Mirena coil? It's the standard treatment for this.

I couldn't have the normal first line treatments for a number of reasons and ended up having an ablation. The bleeding reduced and the pain has eased considerably. I'm still sore and slightly unwell but it's a vast improvement from being almost unable to walk. I had it under general anesthesia and I was in and out on the same day.

My DW has had some really heavy periods in recent years as she goes through menopause.

Some periods went on and on so she was prescribed tranexamic acid which really helped.

I hope you get some help soon.

Tranexamic acid worked for me. I was passing the kind of clots that I could feel slithering out of me. TXA works miracles.i wish I'd asked for it years ago.

Mirena. Love it. No periods at all. Life changing stuff.
