Cramping feeling and back pain after mirena insertion?

I had a mirena coil inserted almost a month ago in advance of starting hrt. It was painful and I had quite bad cramping for a few hours afterwards. However almost 4 weeks later I am still experiencing ongoing stomach and back pain. It's quite low level but it's not normal for me and continued even after my period stopped. Is this likely to just go away eventually? I've been on the pill for decades and starting to wish I hadn't changed to a coil if this is going be normal.

Hi
I had a coil fitted end of May last year. The cramps lasted a couple of weeks maximum i think. It can take a while to settle down unfortunately ( up to 6 months even). Give it time and maybe take paracetamol and ibuprofen in the meantime. Time will tell whether it's for you or not.

Thanks. Difficult to know if there's an issue or if this is just normal.

You could ask either your GP or practice nurse to check for the strings? They do take a while to settle though.

Thanks - I was wondering about that.

Just had mine removed after 7 mnths by gynaecologist who said (and showed me on ultrasound) that it was in wrong place. He was quite cross that GP had done this. No way for me to know as cld still feel threads. Cld be readon for me epic never ending periods. Doesn't hurt to get it looked at properly.

Would be worth getting that checked out I think. I'm on my third mirena and find it great. This last one I had a bit of cramping and pain after insertion but lasted no longer than a week or two then fine after that.

Have you checked for your strings ?
Are the symptoms when you’d expect a period, or all the time ?

botanics · 08/01/2023 19:04

Thanks. Unfortunately I wasn't shown how to check for the strings. Because I have been on the combined pill for decades and never had any cramping during the pill free week it's hard to say if it feels normal or not as it's so long since I had a 'real' period. Since I posted I think things have improved a bit so hopefully this will continue! Thanks for replying.

Sorry meant to say - cramping was continuing after the period had ended.

Checking for strings is a simple as using a finger to find your cervix and you should feel the little pointy ends
