Menopause and seizure

Hi everyone - something weird happened to me a couple of months ago and I wondered if it may be linked to menopause?

I had a random one off loss of consciousness and seizure whilst out and about.

I have been checked at the hospital and there seems to be no obvious cause.

I am 51, on no medication but haven’t had periods for over ten years due to having a Mirena coil.

Only other things going on with me are I’m often more tired despite sleeping well and have started to get muscle spasms in one of my thighs. I also have no tolerance for stupid / annoying / selfish people anymore. 🙈🤣

It’s a bit random so I thought I’d post here.

thank you for reading

Sorry to hear this. I've never heard of menopause being linked to seizures. Puberty is linked to onset of epilepsy, especially in kids with disabilities, but I've never heard of menopause being linked. Please make a GP appointment

Yes it can be linked but tends to happen with women already diagnosed with catamenial epilepsy. I’m one of those, only 37 and have spent the last 10 years and the next 5 or so probably as a result dreading the onset of peri. I would say though you would need to have had more instances to definitively say it’s the menopause causing the seizures. The mirena coil can suppress catamenial epilepsy as progesterone is a neurologically calming hormone. Join one of the catamenial epilepsy groups on facebook like Women with Epilepsy: Catamenial and Complex. You’ll get more advice there.
