Melatonin for sleep

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 16:29

Has anyone used melatonin tablets to help them sleep?

My sleep is non existent, despite following every trick in the book to promote good sleep.

I'm on hrt ( patch 75 and mirena) but sleep remains a massive problem for me.

Thanks.

Have you tried Epsom salt baths and magnesium tablets, and the occasional antihistamine ?

StupidStupidStupidStupidStupid · 01/01/2023 16:33

DS was prescribed melatonin as a child (adhd) I did try his tablets a couple of times, left me feeling awful the next day.
I did try buying some from America for me to use during peri but they were pretty useless. Not sure if customs would be an issue now though.
These days I take magnesium. One a.m, one with lunch then two before bed. My sleep is so much better. not all magnesium is the same. I use these ones, I’ve tried cheaper ones but they have little effect.

Useless

DewinDwl · 01/01/2023 16:39

I have. I was very skeptical but it did make me drowsy and helped me both to fall asleep and stay asleep. I make sure I buy a box OTC when I go on holiday.

daschundthroughthesnow · 01/01/2023 16:40

They give me a big headache and I feel really groggy, they don't even really help me get to sleep either

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 16:43

Mmm mixed reviews then.
What to do, what to do..
I am willing to try anything as so sleep deprived now.

Phenergan works to a point.
Amitriptyline works to a point.

But I don't know how to get out of this sleep fix?

Are the magnesium tablets large?

Might try the Epsom salt bath and I do have magnesium spray with lavender.

I take them every night. They've really helped me

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 16:52

@Chesneyhawkes1 what dose do you take please ?

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2023 16:52

I have some a friend got me from the US. It's great at helping me drop off. But I wake up about 3 hours later.

Remona · 01/01/2023 16:57

I have found that antihistamines help and I’m in a similar position to you.

I had high hopes of melatonin having read good reviews so bought a good brand online. I would say they made matters worse. They probably did help me get to sleep (but no more so than listening to a podcast or audiobook etc.) However, I then woke in the middle of the night. Absolutely wide awake with my heart racing and I couldn’t get back to sleep.

I left an honest review on their site and, surprise surprise, they took it down and refunded my money.

I wouldn’t try them again.

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 16:58

@Toddlerteaplease mmm I don't want to be awake 3 hours later.

@Runaround50 the doctor gave me 2mg. But the ones from them didn't work as well.

I order from a chemist in France. Take Flash 1900, which is 1.9mg but for some reason work better.

I can't take many medications due to my job, but OH cleared me using these.

I've gone from 3-4 hours sleep a night to 7 minimum and that's when I'm on early shift getting up at 5am.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2023 17:08

I was taking 10mg

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 17:31

Thanks Remona,
Well at least you tried them to know they weren't for you.

Do you all knowwhy you don't sleep so well? I mean, is it low oestrogen? Lack of sleep hormones?

OP posts:
Doggydarling · 01/01/2023 18:03

Have you tried progesterone? I know you have mirena but taking progesterone orally can be very helpful for sleep and can be used alongside the coil. It definitely improved my sleep.

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 18:04

@Doggydarling I do have some utrogestan. Worth a shot do you think ? 100 or 200mg?

I take 1 mg timed release melatonin- I have no problems going to sleep but staying asleep I can't do. That helps me go back to sleep.

BamBamBilla · 01/01/2023 18:15

I tried them for a bit and like pp mentioned, for me they worked in getting me to sleep but I'd either wake up 4ish hours later with the worst headache. Headaches stopped the moment I stopped taking them.

Melatonin doesn't work for me.
Judging by how much melatonin is for sale in USA drug stores, I doubt it works for Americans, either.

HairyKitty · 03/01/2023 20:05

@Runaround50 I’m also on similar hrt to you but without the melatonin I would be absolutely sunk. I’ve taken it daily for about 9 months and it’s as effective now as it was in the first place.
Gone from waking 15-20 times a night and waking for the day at 4.30am, to mostly sleeping through til 5.30am - much more civilised.

There’s nothing at all to lose by trying it, I would suggest a timed or sustained release (to reduce night waking) and start with 2mg increasing if needed to you find your own ideal dose (mine is rather high at 8mg).

Be aware that it can be effective quite quickly, this doesn’t mean it will knock you out but more like you could miss the optimum window if you aren’t almost ready to sleep when you take it.

Andsoforth · 03/01/2023 20:13

I asked my menopause specialist for some and she increased my oestrogen instead because she said that it was an indication we hadn’t got the levels right yet.

Runaround50 · 03/01/2023 20:14

Thanks again all.
I'm stumped by this inability to sleep. It genuinely feels like my brain is severely lacking in that hormone completely? I'm so tired now that I feel ill!

The Bach night rescue stuff, I have tried and like the liquid in a bottle. However, it's not enough for the night unfortunately.

@HairyKitty you are right, I've nothing to lose at all. I was thinking of the 5mg, do you think that's too much to begin with? I'm guessing HRT hasn't helped with your sleep then? God what a nightmare! M
Thanks again.
