Flooding

FlemCandango · 29/12/2022 09:41

Just spent the night on the sofa, due to fears of flooding in bed. I have had heavy painful periods from the start. But last night I was flooding while using super tampons and pads, passed alarming jelly like blood clots, needed to change clothes twice. I am left after a poor 4 hours of sleep, feeling weak, and anemic. My eyes have a pale rim, I feel washed out I can't make a fist.

I am 48, so can only assume it is menopause fun. Ugh.

Poor you. Get to the doctor and they will test you for anything else; but hopefully then give you either transexamic acid which is amazing, or recommend the mirena coil which is a life changer! i didn’t realise that this was part of the perimenopause but I do now and actually the sooner you get it sorted the faster your life will improve.

SallyAnn32 · 29/12/2022 09:48

I second @Fleetheart
I suddenly started flooding and tried the tablets to slow it down as above. Unfortunately these didn't work for me but the mirena coil stopped the bleeding almost instantly. I was sceptical as to whether it would work but it's been 2 years now and no bleeding - not even a spot! And I have no side effects at all. I was at the point where I would try anything and thankfully that was the thing.

I hope you find something that will help. It's awful just waiting for that flood. I remember being infront of a classroom of students on a few occasions, and just feeling it go and having to run out.

Definitely get to the doctor. I put up with heavy peri-menopausal periods for too long.
Drugs or the coil can make all the difference.

TanteRose · 29/12/2022 09:52

Yep the joys of peri Confused
as per PP, tranexamic acid is good.

watch out for shorter cycles (periods every two or three weeks) and looong periods too - I had one when I was 51 that lasted a month (I’d run out of tranexamic acid…)

I’m 54 and only had three periods this year (January, March, and September) so hopefully I’m finally winding down.

Thank you all. I took transemic acid at some point last night. We have it because poor DD2 age 14 has it on prescription already (and mefanemic acid), due to her heavy periods (sorry DD). I will speak to GP in the NY.

aneimia is a vicious circle. Makes your bleed more and so periods get heavier and then you get more anemic. Could you get an iron infusion? This should stop you being anemic and then your periods should get lighter. That have been an absolute game changer for me. Iron Tablets just take too long to have an effect.

Beamur · 29/12/2022 10:37

I take iron too, spatone liquid has been recommended to me as being highly palatable.

Period pants with superplus tampon and incontinence pads should make sleeping in bed an option with even puppy pads on top of the sheet in the very short term. But seek help from your GP and make sure you mention how you feel you can't go out or even sleep.

FlemCandango · 29/12/2022 11:23

This was the first time that I can recall I have had such intense and clotty bleeding so caught me a little off guard. I have period pants and use nighttime plus pads but even with those and super tampon I still had to change clothes twice over the early hours of this morning. I am planning on being back in my bed tonight. I will call doctors as I already have blood pressure issues, and history of heart disease in family so anemia is risky.

I am glad I WFH though while I get through this. Though on leave this week I was hoping to do more than lay on sofa.

For your dd very heavy periods, passing clots can be a sign of hypothyroidism. Has she ever had bloods taken?

FlemCandango · 29/12/2022 13:10

DD is "just" heavy and painful periods not clots. She has inherited menorrhagia from me - we do keep in touch with GP but things have improved for her over the last year.

The Mirena coil might be your friend.

You can also take ibuprofen as directed which will slow the flow (but make sure it can be used with Tran. acid.)
