Hello
I’m 47, my cycles have always been regular (28-30 days) and uremarkable until about a year ago when they became shorter (20-22 days)
They then lengthened to 30ish days and the last 2 have been 35 and 42 days
I’ve now been bleeding for over 2 weeks and it lightens off, then becomes suddenly heavier- it literally gushes
I had a consult with my GP earlier in the week when my flow was light. She did a thorough internal and external exam and couldn’t find anything obvious uterus feels ok and cervix looks healthy - she thinks it’s likely hormonal, but wasn’t remotely dismissive. She suggested to monitor and she’ll refer me for a pelvic US after xmas

Cooncidentally, I had an abdo US the other day (to confirm a hernia) and got chatting to the radiologist who performed it. He doesn’t do pelvic US, so it would require a separate referral. He agreed with GP- Likely hormonal, but good idea to scan to check for fibroids, etc

Can anyone relate pls? After a year of hell, I’m full of anxiety, which I understand won’t be helping!

I will obviously follow up, I just want to give my head a break, over Christmas

Thanks so much 🌸

I don't relate but it sounds like you're doing all the right things. Good luck OP and I hope it settles for you soon.

Sounds like what I went through in perimenopause, from about age 44. My 28 day cycle became erratic, I could have a period anything from two weeks to six weeks apart, or miss one altogether. They became heavier too and dragged on longer than usual. It's very normal for this to happen as in perimenopause as far as I'm aware.

After 18 months of this nonsense my GP suggested having a Mirena coil fitted, so I had it inserted during a hysteroscopy and D&C to check all was well. The Mirena was miraculous in that it stopped my periods completely and I literally never had another one.
