They have been getting worse and OTC meds don’t touch the pain. I have been given Sumatriptan finally. Any take this? Does it help?

I have been getting more migraines lately, with a blinding aura. Sumatriptan does keep them at bay, without losing the whole day to lying in a darkened room.

Sumitriptan does help me. I have always had migraines but they got far worse about 10 months ago when my periods got erratic. Sumitriptan is the only thing that shifts them, but I do tend to get a rebound headache from it for one or two days after the migraine.

GP put me on a preventive, amitriptyline at a low dose, this definitely helps, the number of migraines has decreased, and if I forget to take it they start creeping back again.

I'm hoping the migraines will ease once my periods stop completely, I don't fancy being on amitriptyline for years, as it's makes me feel sluggish.

Topiramate and HRT have reduced the frequency of mine significantly!

I take Zolmitriptan which I find (mostly) effective. I'm.guessing it's from.the sa.e family as Sumatriptan.

As a previous poster said, I've also been given amitryptaline to use preventively but haven't started it yet (putting it off as I'm. worried about drowsiness- above post from a PP not reassuring 😩)

Sumatriptan have saved my life.
I have awful migraines, it's the number one reason why I went on Hrt as they were coming on clusters monthly even though my periods stopped a long while ago, and we felt a steady flow of hormones would help stabilise everything.
I still get migraines but not as frequently.
Once it's settled on one side and I know it's a migraine and not a headache, Sumatriptan will relieve it generally within half an hour.
I am very lucky I get absolutely zero side effects from it. Its like a fist unclenching in my head.

@antiquisearchers the drowsiness gets better after a couple of weeks on amitriptyline. You just need to take it not too late in the evening as the sleepy side effect lasts about 12 hours, at least it does for me.

Sumatriptan is bloody amazing stuff.
I was on this and amitryptline.
I've tried many of medicines over the years but barely any work. I had to come off amitryptline because it would knock me for 6 and with 3 kids under 7 at the time, I just couldn't take them. I wouldn't wake at night if they stirred and REALLY struggled with the school runs the next day if taken too late. But then if I took it too early, I'd be flat out way earlier than I needed to be and ideally.
The dr at the time didn't want me on sumatriptan for too long, and it had got to the point where I was experiencing SO many migraines, that they didn't want to keep prescribing me sumatriptans. I was also experiencing slight side effects but manageable none the less and was tonnes better once it shifted the migraine.
Since this.. I've given up! I've suffered for 15 years and now I rely on my head cool pack when I keep in the freezer and sleep, if I can. I don't want to keep putting different drugs in my body and going back and fourth to the GP.

Thanks @Sulusu I started taking it the night after I posted that and it's been OK, no real drowsiness.
