Hi I've posted before over similar problem but really confused I can't seem to find the right answers I asked if I could go back on mini pill (came off it in June to do fsh tests ) was told I can't go on pill as I've started hrt patches so I asked if I could have a mirena coil fitted for contraception and was told due to my fsh results being 120iu and my LH being 57 I am menopausal so therefore don't need contraception spoke to 2 more separate docs at same practice who said the same thing I'm trying to be sensible and careful don't want to get pregnant but been refused both of us hate condoms can insist I need contraception or are the docs right and I can't conceive any advice please

Do you still have periods?

Why do you disagree about being menopausal?

QueenOfHiraeth · 26/10/2022 21:34

I might be wrong but I thought menopause was confirmed as 2 years without periods under 50 or 1 year without over 50?

KangarooKenny · 26/10/2022 21:34

How old are you ?

KangarooKenny · 26/10/2022 21:34

Sorry, just seen the answer !

The blood tests do look as if you are post menopausal but blood tests can vary so we do often advise to continue contraception. You absolutely can have the POP as well as HRT (as the progestogen component in HRT is not licenced for contraception) Mirena would be a great option as licensed for both endometrial protection in HRT and also for contraception.
In reality, your chance of getting pregnant is probably exceedingly low given the history and blood results but it's reasonable if you would like to prevent any chance of pregnancy, to continue to use contraception.

As she was on the POP for years, she may well not have had periods so can't use this as a way of determining menopausal status.

Joanne73460 · 26/10/2022 22:25

I'm 49 I definitely believe I'm menopausal got plenty of symptoms which started a year ago but as I was on POP a lot of symptoms didn't show and haven't had a period since coming off POP this June so like you I believed have to go 1-2 years without period before being sure

At 49 I’d assume you are peri, not that you’ve reached menopause, and I think it’s wrong to say you can’t conceive at all. Particularly when youve only had symptoms for one year.
I would insist on the Mirena as part of your HRT, and tell them that you will sue if they refuse and you get pregnant.
You could also try the sexual health clinic and ask for it for contraception.

Yeah thought that too been trying to get an appointment with family planning but no luck yet I'll keep trying although I think I was peri-menopausel 5 years ago just didn't connect the symptoms I would drip with sweat when hoovering etc just put it down to extra weight gain also as hubby reminded me I've told him to eff off a few times over the last 3 years threatened to kick him out leaving him completely bewildered I was so angry then crying over kittens on you tube other symptoms come to mind over the last few years lack of sleep anxiety attacks etc so still not sure if I'm peri still or full blown menopausal but thanks for advice
