Is there anyone who has taken Ovestin and it's made them feel a bit weird?

Immediately got tender boobs and a low level headache. Anyone else have that, did it settle down?

I had the opposite - I got no effect from it whatsoever, zilch, and had a VERY hard time convincing the consultant that this ‘gold standard, nothing else comes near’ treatment was bloody useless for me. (Now on Vagifem which has been much better).

Every body is different - if you think it is affecting you then do bring it up with your consultant, just because it’s a very low dose doesn’t mean you aren’t sensitive to it.

I actually saw her for another issue and she also advised Ovestin as she said I was quite dry- I didn't realise I was until she examined me. NHS hospital.

You really want to read up on what follows this, if left untreated. Not meaning to ring the bells of doom, but it is not pleasant. Pain, shrinkage, UTIs, etc etc.

I do wish all doctors (and more women) were more educated on this phase of a woman's life, and able to give accurate information. Which you've not been given. At least your early stages of skin changes/atrophy were picked up by her.

@MadelineUsher you seem to know a lot about this
I had a hysterectomy 6 years ago now hrt and was only 40 do reading things like this makes me think I should take it or at least use this cream ?
Just reading whats available as really thinking I should be rethinking the no hrt

MadelineUsher · 24/10/2022 00:40

I don't take/use hrt, but I do use Ovestin cream. The benefits for me have been great; wish I'd started earlier. I am sad so many women aren't advised re this.

JinglingHellsBells has all the most up to date info, I think, and latest advice.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Even IF there is a connection between your sore boobs and Ovestin, it will pass. it's quite normal for women on systemic HRT to get some tenderness or similar in the first few months. But bear in mind a low, daily dose of HRT is 100 x stronger than 1 application of Ovestin which has 0.1% weak estrogen. If you reduce the dose, it won't do you any good at all, because the amount of hormone in that 1mg of cream is minute. Most of the product is the 'carrier' base cream. It can take 3 months or more to see really good effects especially if the bladder is atrophied too.

I feel perturbed TBH that your dr is telling women to 'expect' sore breasts (and any other side effects on the leaflet) as it's also known that the 'nocebo' effect is very powerful - (expect a side effect and it will happen.) My consultant has spoken about this regarding all meds, including HRT.

When I first started Ovestin 16 years ago, one of my first questions was about transferring to a male partner during sex. I remember asking 'Is this ok or will he become feminised?' I was told not, as it's so weak. There are actually estrogens in the environment that we are all exposed to daily, in plastics, in foods (phytoestrogens, especially soya) etc.

As a PP said, if you don't treat VA it can become so bad that it's hard to reverse. There are papers online from menopause consultants, saying that women who are older and who have delayed starting treatment, have less good outcomes than women who use it as soon as necessary.

Keep going with it!

I really appreciate you posting but I resent the fact you keep implying I couldn't possibly be feeling side effects and it's all in my head and placebo just because my gynea mentioned sore breasts. Others have mentioned side effects too. I'm sure it's not your intention but it does feel like you are dismissing my experience with it. As I said I will try it again when I haven't got much on as the side effects were enough to make me feel rotten enough to slow me down.
