Just wanted to share in case anyone else is nervous about taking the first steps towards HRT. I had an initial telephone conversation with my GP yesterday and she was just fantastic. Agreed that all my symptoms would suggest I was most definitely peri and sent me some links to read up on the various HRT options including the coil, body identical HRT, risk factors etc and even flagged a possible need for testosterone but explained I'd need to go private for that. I went in for a BP check that same afternoon and she has started me on low dose gel and progesterone (not picked up the prescription yet to know exactly what). She has booked in a 3 month review but said I could ring at anytime if things got worse/weren't right. I felt listened to, taken seriously and validated.

I nearly starting crying she was so lovely not that it takes much nowadays. Even if this first attempts at HRT isn't a miracle cure for my hideous moods, lack of libido and crushing fatigue, it's such a boost to know there is someone who will listen and understand that I'm not going mad or have dementia (thanks DH!) .

That's great to hear, to often we only talk about the negative sides to the NHS. My GP was exactly like these re my peri menopause as well. Its great to be listened to. My HRT worked a treat, the anxiety, insomnia and brain fog have improved. I have recently had a change of prescription as some symptoms are back and the GP took time to discuss options and rebook for 3 months.

Hope it works well for you.

Some GPs are great.

The first one I saw at my surgery was just useless, refused HRT or any treatment and basically told me I was "normal" .

The second''s approach was so different, he listened, asked about my symptoms, agreed that if a 49 year woman is telling you she is menopausal you should be listening to her, and asked whether i'd prefer patches or gel. Brilliant.

I actually had a phone consult with a third GP this morning as I think I need to increase the dose and again she was lovely, agreed no bother to up to the dose for 3 months and promised to speak to the pharmacy team about alternatives to the brand of the patch i'm using as I'm sensitive to the glue they use.

There really shouldn't be such variation though, and not between three GPs all at the same practice.
