Early menopause symptoms after hysterectomy

Help! I had a total hysterectomy last year in my late 30s but kept my ovaries. All fine until recently when I've had bad insomnia, feel really hot at night and just feel a bit more down. Obviously I don't have periods anymore, but post-op I was still getting sore boobs each month which I realised I haven't felt for a while.

Is it worth a trip to the doc to discuss the possibility of early menopause? I know my symptoms are quite vague and I don't have more obvious things like hot flashes in the day. I'll feel bad wasting their time if it's nothing, but I know there is a slightly higher risk of ovarian failure after hysterectomy and so want to get it sorted if it's that.

I'm currently thinking wait it out another month or two to see if things improve/get worse but it's so hard to know if it could be menopause when you don't have periods! Anyone been through anything similar or have any words of wisdom?

I'd get it checked out. I don't have a hysterectomy but did get sterilised. Ovaries obviously left in place but clipped. A few months later I started getting hot flushes at night, low mood etc - asked the doctor and they said that ovaries are very sensitive/delicate and can get easily upset. So whilst mine were still in place they were "failing", leading to symptoms above.

I did continue with periods for a few years but they were peri - heavy, flooding etc, so possibly did trigger the meno. Who knows.

Ah the joys. Solve one problem, replace it with something else.

Well I had a hysterectomy but they left my ovaries so my situation isn't directly comparable. I did that the short-term extreme artificial menopause caused by drugs before the op so I think I always had those symptoms in my mind when the real ones came on. But yes, go and see your GP. You will probs be offered HRT after blood tests and HRT was definitely a boon for me. ( I'm late 50's and been struggling to find the right way to get off it for the last few years). I think it will certainly help your mood, your emotions and the flushes. Just go and talk it over whenever you can an appointment. No reason not to.

I had my ovaries removed with my hysterectomy, and went into menopause overnight. Apparently your ovaries are likely to stop working early (if you keep them) post-hysterectomy, so I would see a GP.

Definitely see your GP and hot at night IS hot flashes so a symptom of menopause.

I had hysterectomy at 34 and kept ovaries. By 36 I was peri menopausal (via bloods) I started getting symptoms mainly night waking and really really hot (no sweats) from 37 and started oestrogen gel at 39 as it was really bothering me.
early menopause is also hereditary and my mum was early 40’s.
ask for bloods and get them to treat the symptoms no need to suffer.

I kept my ovaries 13yrs agi and swear it triggered an early menopause. Sadly my GPs would only go on blood tests so they dismissed me twice. (And yes, I know blood tests aren't good indicators but I'm too worn out to go in for round three).

Thanks all, that's really helpful. I think I'll make an appointment with the GP and go from there.

It's well known (and maybe ought to have been said to you!) that it's very common for the ovaries to fail within 2 years of a hysterectomy and women who've had the op tend to have earlier menopause.

My consultant told me there is no evidence that is true.
I think he was talking shit
