Positive coil stories?

I’ve been on gel plus utrogestan for about 6 months now, and am still having irregular bleeding. Because I had vulval cancer 3 years ago, I am very carefully monitored so I had an ultrasound this week which showed a thickening of the womb lining.

Im having a hysteroscopy to check it’s nothing sinister, but my gynaecologist has suggested I switch to a coil for my progesterone dose.

I am nervous of this because (a) my friend has just done this switch and has had a miserable time and (b) due to my medical history I have a very low tolerance of people messing with my vagina!

Does anyone have more positive stories of making the switch to a coil?

I had one inserted three weeks ago and so far so good. I had very light bleeding for two weeks afterwards. I got it because my periods had gone haywire. Timing completely screwed up and heavier, more painful. I'm hoping the coil (Mirena) will lessen them or even stop them completely.

I had one inserted. Got it inserted under general anesthesia as had awful vulvadynja (pain in the vagina). Had it for 5 years. Loved it to pieces. Only took out to ttc. Will have another when completed thr family

I have the Mirena coil and I love it. Insertion wasn't fun but it was over fairly quickly. I had a week or so of mild crampiness after and then some very light spotting on and off for a few months. And now nothing. No periods. No pain. Life changing.

I've just had my 3rd fitted and I wouldn't be without it.

I have a copper coil. It was a bit uncomfortable to insert and I had pain for a few days and then period cramps for the first three months, but since then - about a year ago - I've barely given it any thought at all. I had my doubts at first but I'm really glad I did it.

I love mine, I’m on my second and had it about 8 years.

The insertion the second time was fairly unpleasant, but the trade off for not having periods is amazing.

My periods stopped straight away and the freedom from monthly bleeds and the emotional roller coaster that goes with them has been life changing for me. Properly life changing.

I got it because my periods were getting really heavy and for contraception. I also have oestrogen patch now I’m a bit older.

Thank you for the encouraging stories. I have a more open mind about it now.

You could always go and try.... if it doesn't go well tell them to stop.

I wouldn't be without mine. Insertion was like a more rummagey smear. No pain a bit uncomfy but fine she put numbing gel on my cervix. Next day I spotted a bit and mild cramps.
I spotted on and off til my next period, when that finished that was it. No more periods, that was 3 years ago.

I'm on my 3rd, had to have this one fitted under general as the y couldn't find the strings , but I m really happy with them , and no periods really for 13 years !

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/10/2022 08:36

Rummaged my smear is the best description I've ever read Grin

Dogtooth · 01/10/2022 08:42

I just had mine out. I'm 40, not menopausal so far as I know!

My periods are naturally 2-3 days and over. With a coil it was 7-10 days of brown discharge/spotting which I found unpleasant.

I also found it affected me sexually - less spontaneous arousal, less pleasure on orgasm.

Might be worth the trade off for some, but it wasn't for me.

wantmorenow · 01/10/2022 08:43

Had 2 with no problems. Fitting was brutal but no periods after 8 weeks. Each lasted 5+ years. Decided to not have replaced as post menopause. Bled continuously for months, new mirena put in. All good again for 2 years so far. Marvellous device.

I hardly slept the night before it was put in due to the horror stories I’d read, and people saying we should be offered local anaesthetic.
When I got on the bed they put a pulse oximeter on me, and the nurse asked if I wanted to hold her hand. So now I was really worried.
The fitting was a breeze, just like a smear, in fact I’ve had worse smears. I actually laughed when she said she was done. I can’t believe I was so worried.
People who had coils said that I’d never have another period. Unfortunately I was one of the few who had spotting for 6 months, and now I have a very light period. But it’s much better than the heavy, frequent periods that caused anaemia before.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/10/2022 08:49

A rummagey smear, yes. It wasn't comfortable but it was over quickly.

Badger1970 · 01/10/2022 08:53

I'm on my 5th Mirena. Wouldn't not have one.

I'm also 52 and have got zero menopause symptoms....... which the GP said is due to the coil.

I've got a very well hidden cervix but they know this and I have anaesthetic injected into it so they can use dilation rods. Never feel a thing apart from a brief sting from the needle. So bear in mind that you can ask for local anaesthetic if you're concerned.

KangarooKenny · 01/10/2022 08:56

The mirena helped my PMT. An unexpected bonus.
