Estrogen Cream and dog poisoning

Jaydog13 · 21/09/2022 07:00

I have just found out that the estrogen / testosterone cream I apply twice a day on my forearms is poisoning my dogs. The symptoms are enlarged nipples ( I have male dogs) and hair loss among other issues. The vets haven’t been able to diagnose the problems for a few years until a specialist vet asked if anyone in the house uses estrogen cream. Please do not hug or stroke your dog when you have the cream on. Wash your hands and apply in an area that will not effect the dogs. It can come through clothing. Please tell your friends who have dogs. I am going to ask my doctor if I can take a tablet instead. Hormone replacement and dogs I hope this helps other dog owners.

Why not apply your HRT to your inner thighs or upper arms? (Not sure about the placement of testosterone.)

FWIW you can also transfer it to humans if you have close contact within an hour.

After an hour it's fine and won't come through clothes.

I was always under the impression that whatever the method of delivery of HRT, whether cream, gel or patch, it should be put around your bum, top of your thighs etc. Nrver above the waist.

The instruction leaflet in estrogen gel gives the areas where to apply.

Inner thighs
Upper (outer )arms

I copied and pasted this from the leaflet on the thread that's been going for a while about applying/ drying gel in cold weather. It's a few threads down.

I stand corrected! But OP does say she;s beem applying on her forearms which isn't advised.

Inner forearms is advised for some eostrogen, Lenzetto for one. I will be taking greater care touching my dog from now on

Sorry to read this OP. I hope that your dog is okay.

I have cats and recall my specialist menopause nurse telling me not to hug my pets (or humans) after applying the gel - which is to be applied to inner thigh and/or upper arms.

I've been using Estradiol gel for a while now without any effect to my cats (they are very affectionate and love human contact). Can't you carry on with the gel and apply it to upper arms/thighs and not hug the dogs for a period of time?

@Jaydog13 The reason for applying it to the areas mentioned in the leaflet is that estrogen is supposedly absorbed better by fat cells. (So that's why patches go on the bum or thighs, and gel goes on thighs or upper arms.)

It's not that the forearms are 'dangerous' in any way, just that for most women they are bony rather than 'fatty'.

After an hour, the absorption is complete which is when it's ok to go swimming or showering, or hug humans and pets 😊

Hi
Thank you for sharing this, can I ask did your dog recover well?
