Did you get a "high" on hrt then a dip?

FayeGovan · 16/09/2022 13:01

I started hrt a few weeks ago, at first i really noticed a difference,
Much calmer, much less anxiety, just generally more emotions on an even keel. And bladder problems got much better.

But this lasted a couple of weeks or so then im back to how i always felt, anxious about everything, overthinking, worrying, cant talk myself down. And the bladder issues are back. Its been over a month now and I'll keep going with it but im really hoping the calm feeling i had at first returns.

Has anyone found they had similar?

a little, i'm waiting on a telephone appointment to discuss my dose or maybe change my method of HRT (currently tablets)

FayeGovan · 16/09/2022 13:19

I was told to give it 3 months and see how it feels. im on patches.

i just thought with the initial bounce id not go back to how i felt.

Though i guess the flushes and night sweats are getting better

I feel exactly like this. I'm glad you posted as I wanted to post this question but wasn't even sure how to word it.

I feel so stupid - I was thrilled to feel better (I was days rather than weeks for me) but I felt so optimistic that things were improving and I suddenly seemed to have energy and motivation and I'm devastated that things are back to normal again. 😕

FayeGovan · 17/09/2022 17:50

Me too

I was telling friends how brilliant it was, now im telling them i feel like i always felt...and i think they think im a bit daft😐

And i genuinely did feel better at first, i noticed when dealing with something that previously made me cry every time i was fine, calm and not even near tears....it wasnt a placebo effect as i noticed the difference retrospectively, i didn't go looking for it

I get this as well. I’ve been told it’s due to the natural hormone fluctuations in your body, they don’t stop just because you are on HRT. This makes you feel different at different times of the month. I’ve been on it for over a year now and the swings are not as extreme as they used to be so for me it has got a lot better. You might also need a bit more oestrogen. I use Oestrogel and the doctor told me when I started, to use more or less (in half squirt increments) until you get the right dose to alleviate the symptoms. I went from 2 to 1.5, back to 2, 2.5 and I’ve ended up on 3 which seems to do the job. I don’t know the patch equivalent, but I’d speak to your doctor.

FayeGovan · 17/09/2022 21:23

Yes that makes sense

I definitely had this at the beginning but it gradually settled and by 6 months I felt good every day Smile
Give it time.

FayeGovan · 20/09/2022 11:42

Thanks thats good to know

@FayeGovan hi, I was wondering how things were going and if you’re feeling any better?

I’ve had the odd glimpse of days (hours really) where I’ve felt things might be possible. I’m desperate to hang on to the idea that things really will improve over a few months.

I completely relate to what you described about crying, I feel like that most of the time these days and it makes things really difficult.

i hope things are getting better for you. 💐

FayeGovan · 09/10/2022 13:51

Hi, thanks for asking. I kind of unsure how i feel now, i dont feel as jittery but i dont feel as calm as i felt when i first started hrt. I think i need more oestrogen, i might ask if i can increase the patches dose next time i see the menopause nurse. Im just not convinced about it all but I'll keep plugging away....

How are you doing @SnapCackleFlop

Hi op Im a few weeks on patches. No major improvement wonder is dosage low 50.. I felt good for a week but guess takes time.

SnapCackleFlop · 10/10/2022 13:00

Hi @FayeGovan (and everyone else in the same boat), I think I'm maybe in a similar position to you. I've found that the physical symptoms have improved a lot (night sweats, hot flushes, palpitations) but the emotional / mental ones really haven't (feeling really depressed and tearful but also sometimes very anxious / panicky).

Right when I started taking it I had this feeling that's hard to describe but it was like I was actually capable, like I had the energy to do things. Now I'm back to feeling like I'm dragging myself through the days.

I'd heard so many stories of women who improved very quickly and really wanted that to be me. I know others said it took quite a few months so maybe that'll happen for me eventually.

Mary46 · 10/10/2022 15:19

Snap same here. No big changes. Good energy then tired again. Disheartened a bit. Will give it a bit more time..

Athrawes · 18/07/2023 05:47

Yes, it's like you were soooo not right, that even a tiny bit makes you feel better. Then you realise that you don't feel better enough, so need a bit more.
I went on 25 mg, then 50, then 75, 100 and am now stable on 75. 50 is not enough and I don't need 100 to get the benefits.

mrslme · 18/07/2023 15:03

I experienced similar, started on Evorel 25 patches ( I have a Mirena coil) then at review upped to 50 with another review 3 months later. 6 weeks in and I felt like I'd gone almost back to square 1! I couldn't face waiting weeks til my next review so got a telephone consultation (I've never seen a Doctor yet!) and he put me up to 75 and I feel back on the road again. I'm sooo glad I didn't wait for my review

Passthecake30 · 20/07/2023 06:50

I felt similar on 2 pumps of gel, but I feel fine 100% of the time after swapping to patches

RatouilleAndFeta · 20/07/2023 18:31

I feel terrible on the progesterone weeks op. Great on the oestrogen only weeks.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 20/07/2023 18:47

RatouilleAndFeta · 20/07/2023 18:31

I feel terrible on the progesterone weeks op. Great on the oestrogen only weeks.

Ditto. On top of the world with estrogen but horrendous with progesterone.

escript · 20/07/2023 19:00

I felt like they were helping with sleep initially but that's still as bad as ever a few weeks in. Hot flushes and energy levels have improved, but have had a 12 day period, and I hoped they'd gone for good.

On evorel 50.

escript · 20/07/2023 19:00

How are you doing now? @FayeGovan

imnotthatkindofmum · 20/07/2023 22:41

If you feel bad on progesterone weeks you prob need to up the oestrogen. Often oestrogen can make you feel worse if it's not enough (anecdotal from my extensive reading and research, not scientific fact)

I personally can't survive without progesterone, I take it continuously so everyone's different but it's worth tweaking your side if it's not sucking for you.

imnotthatkindofmum · 20/07/2023 22:42

Your dose...not your side!

imnotthatkindofmum · 20/07/2023 22:42

Working not sucking....ffs

RedHotGigi · 20/07/2023 22:59

Yes I had the same thing happen. Dr says it is because the HRT patch is a generic and not a namebrand.

I've been slathering myself in lavender essential oil when I feel it creeping in. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't.
