Collagen as well as HRT?

I'm starting HRT next week for an initial trial. One of my symptoms is horrendously itchy skin and I'm tempted to order some collagen supplements. Is this a daft idea until I've seen if the HRT helps? Assuming so but need talking out of the purchase I'm so uncomfortable.

Once you’ve got the hormone level right the itchy skin should subside, I get trying to get rid of it asap, but I IMHO think I’d try and work with the hrt first

I would be in agreement on getting the HRT side of things sorted first. I am also very sceptical on the whole collagen thing. I was watching This Morning yesterday and they did a segment on collagen if you want to do a bit of research in the meantime. Apparently bovine collagen is the way to go which doesn't sound very pleasant.

WarriorN · 01/09/2022 11:12

I'm not sure the research is that sound.

Apparently a multi vit with copper and biotin is as good and probably fish oils/ omega/ cod liver oil.

I noticed skin improvements with hrt (eg when I yawn the skin round my mouth doesn't feel as tight, skin less dry on feet.)

WarriorN · 01/09/2022 11:25

Oh and bumpy skin on arms really improved (Kp.) that's known as a dry skin condition so hrt seemed to improve how dry my skin was

Thanks so much for replies; hugely appreciated

My very itchy skin disappeared quickly with HRT- around 3 weeks, I hope it works for you too.

NorthernPud · 02/09/2022 19:42

Thanks a lot

Collagen taken orally has not been shown to be digested and getting to the skin.
If youare itching have you tried an antihistamine, or any of the products from brands like Eucerin and E45 to try to calm it down?

mrslees1 · 03/09/2022 18:01

Hiya
If you decide to go for the collagen it's best to go for a liquid as opposed to powder and as soon as you open the tub it affects the performance x

Fififizz · 03/09/2022 18:15

I think HRT then maybe a good fish oil in addition. I’m not sold on collagen. I read if you eat skin on fish and chicken etc it’s the same stuff.

NorthernPud · 03/09/2022 19:14

Thanks again all. Think I will give the HRT at least a month before I consider collagen. Appreciated!

I've never heard of collagen being used to help itchy skin TBH.

I've seen it marketed to help people look younger, by supposedly replacing the collagen we have in our skin that slowly depletes with age/ sun/ unhealthy lifestyle.

Everything I've seen about it, says there is no science to show that swallowing collagen gets to the skin and that in fact it's destoyed by digestion.
