Supplement causing increase in hot flashes

Hi

I had been suffering with peri menopausal symptoms from about 45 anxiety, brain fog, night sweats that kind of thing they lasted about 18 months then tailed off. Great I thought I got off quite lightly until now.

I've started taking a supplement includes magnesium, calcium, vit D and zinc. have been low in vit D previously and nurse had mentioned magnesium to me. Also magnesium was mentioned on mumsnet for puffy feet etc in the heat. However I have been having so many hot flashes for the past few days. Surely this can't be a coincidence I'm going to have to stop taking them right? It's a shame as the supplement he as helped with the puffiness, has anybody else had any similar experiences?

Looks as if it's peri back and you are having more symptoms.

Those extra minerals don't cause flushes.
FWIW the advice on taking calcium is under scrutiny at the moment. There is a concern that it may be laid down in the arteries and cause furring up.

Honestly, if you need more magnesium, there are loads of foods that contain it. It's far better to get all these minerals from food.

If you have puffy feet it's worth seeing a dr. Swollen ankles or feet can be a sign of heart or kidney disease.

Yikes I didn't realise it comes back!

Thanks so much for the advice - re calcium how frightening, I'll take a break from the supplements, and look into going to the doctor's re puffy feet. I have however, always been prone to them in hot weather, I would be worried about wasting GP's time.

TBH the best thing for puffy feet is a cold footbath and raising your feet on a chair.

Peri symptoms can come and go for ages and at your age (assume you are 47 or so?) you are still very young in terms of meno.

I'm a couple of months away from 49 and haven't had symptoms or a period for over a year. I thought perhaps I was one of the lucky ones who who sails through it. I have been really suffering with the hot flashes this week though and dreading how long this will last. I forgot to mention that the supplements have really helped with the puffiness, but I can do without the side effects. Raising feet etc have never made a difference unfortunately.

This might help

The flushes- some women only start once their periods stop or their estrogen levels fall away further.

No knowing how long it will last. It could be forever, worst case, or a few years.
HRT? Think about it.

Just for inof @ColumboOnTheCase I took a calcium and magnesium supplement for years and years as I wasn't eating dairy (it was Osteocare) and the calcium /magnesium ratio is 2:1. The magnesium certainly worked in one way! Very loose bowels ( a known side effect.) I'm not taking it now and relying on diet for calcium. Never noticed any connection at all with meno symptoms. (But of course everyone is different.)

Thank you @JinglingHellsBells Osteocare is the supplement I am taking. I had many symptoms before, but not hot flashes and the sudden onslaught of them has taken me by surprise. I have plenty of calcium in my diet so I may look into different sources of magnesium and zinc as it has truly made a difference. I can see my ankles and there is a marked change in my hands and fingers too.

Thank you for the link it's most useful it's clear to me there are a few changes I need to make.

Re HRT my mother had many illnesses I'm worried I will inherit. The puffy hands and feet I already have, she also has high BP and now diabetes but most notably had BC. My maternal grandmother passed away in her 50's with what I don't know, as she was in a developing country. I'm worried that it may have been BC, in which case I will need to look more closely before I consider HRT.

Thanks again for your help and advice 😊

I gave up on Osteocare recently as the list of ingredients (in the chewable sort) is scary. Many of them are artificial sweeteners and flavours and there is evidence that these affect gut health and , long term, may contribute to metabolic syndrome diseases like diabetes.

Get some plain magnesium from a brand like Solgar.
