doodleygirl · 16/08/2022 20:23

Mine stopped aged 54

Beldam · 16/08/2022 20:24

54 still going too…not on hrt either

Tiggy321 · 16/08/2022 20:24

51 and still have them. Want them to stop now!!

Solosunrise · 16/08/2022 20:26

Mine stopped at 54 after being a bit more erratic than usual for a year. They just got further further apart, then stopped. No hrt. Though now looking into it for all the benefits they keep talking about, but no symptoms as such

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/08/2022 20:27

Nearly 52.... still going

woopdedoodle · 16/08/2022 20:27

I was 57 when they stopped, no HRT.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 16/08/2022 20:28

52 and regular periods here too getting on my last fucking nerve.
I THINK I’m having peri symptoms but not sure.

Bastard periods.

Superbabe64 · 16/08/2022 20:28

The 'periods' won't be periods if you are using HRT on a monthly cycle. They are withdrawal bleeds and come usually 2-3 days after the last pill in the pack.

You won't know if you are having natural periods while using a cyclic type of HRT.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/08/2022 22:30

55 and still regular as clockwork. So bored of it now.

51, not on HRT, having intense peri symptoms for the past four years (less severe symptoms for a couple of years prior to that) , and still having a period every bastard month.

Solidarity. One day soon it will be over.

BadGranny · 16/08/2022 22:32

I never had HRT, periods stopped at 55. No menopause symptoms at all - guess I just got lucky.

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 22:33

My periods still appear to be periods . They don't coincide with the last pill in the pack . My hrt is taken every day - no break . And my app counts down to the next period which is always on time . And heavy . Not a light withdrawal bleed . Full blown looks like a murder occurred in the bathroom/ bed/ underwear periods . 🤷🏻‍♀️

It'll be the hrt. I take progesterone for 2 out 4 weeks and still get a bleed, though only light, for about 5 days every month. I'm late 60s.

So when do they appear? How soon before the end of the pack? It's very unlikely they are you own periods if they are bang on time when you are 50 and in peri AND on HRT.

All HRT is taken daily. No one has a break.
The withdrawal bleed comes after the last dose of progestogen (which is in 14 tablets each month, from half way through the pack, as well as the estrogen.)

Withdrawal bleeds can be heavy- mine is much heavier than my own periods were, especially in peri meno.

Even when women start it while they have their own period, HRT usually resets the cycle and overrides the natural cycles.

On another point in your 1st post- if you still have symptoms- the estrogen dose needs increasing.

How long have you been on HRT?

JinglingHellsBells · 17/08/2022 07:10

So when do they appear? How soon before the end of the pack?

Or after the end of one pack and the start of the next one.

Most withdrawal bleeds are anywhere from 2-4 days into the new pack.

5128gap · 17/08/2022 09:29

I did until I was 51 then a break for 6 months, then another break for 9 months, then another break. Started HRT 4 months ago age 53 (conti patch prescribed, even though I hadn't been 12m period free) and despite no meno symptoms, but I wanted to protect my bones, and GP agreed. I've had irregular periods since which may be 'natural' or the HRT settling down.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/08/2022 09:40

That’s not unusual at all I don’t think - up to mid 50s is normal

blobby10 · 17/08/2022 15:21

53 and still going! No HRT and have a Mirena coil which has been in place for 5 years. Get the aching joints, mind fog, disturbed sleep, crazy sugar cravings (which then make me feel sick when I give in to them) crippling tiredness (generally after the sugar binge) and serious lack of motivation to do anything - housework, exercise, sort my life out etc My mum finished her periods at 50 and my maternal grandmother was 48. Neither had the horrendously heavy and erratic periods I experienced until I had a coil fitted.

Sorry to hijack but@JinglingHellsBells, I think this is a rarely discussed topic and would be interested in your expertise. I know if your periods have stopped you’d normally take continuous progesterone and I think if they haven’t you take it cyclically. I am in the latter group, aged 46, does this mean I will have a monthly bleed for as long as I take progesterone, potentially the rest of my life? Or do you somehow have to figure out when your natural cycle has ceased, switch to continuous and then that’s the end of bleeding? How do you do that if both types of bleeding come round monthly? Thanks!

KTyoupigeon · 18/08/2022 00:08

55 PCOS sufferer who only had 2-3 periods a year until I hit around 45 - then regular as clock work with a cycle of 24 days! Just started to see a change in my cycle and have missed 1-2 months at a time BUT the period after is horrendous - the cramps are unbearable especially on the side where my ovarian cysts are. Also suffer with hormonal migraines AND lots of the peri-menopausal symptoms! There are some months I wish I wasn’t a female

There are essentially 3 types of HRT.

  1. oestrogen only. This can only be taken by women who have had a hysterectomy
  2. continuous combined HRT - this is a combination of oestrogen and progesterone where you have the same dose every day, so there is no cycle. You can only have this form when you have gone a year without a period. You would not bleed on this.
  3. cyclical HRT. The oestrogen component is continuous and the same every day, and the progesterone component is taken for 2 weeks of the cycle. This will cause a monthly bleed.

Really useful info @TheOGCCL. I fall into the third category. If the bleed I’m experiencing is due to the progesterone in weeks 3 and 4 of my patches, how will I know when my periods have actually stopped?? It’s all a bit confusing for my poor peri brain!

You won't know unfortunately, unless you stop the HRT and see what happens.
