Question about skipping utrogestan for a month to avoid period on holiday

Hello,

I have been taking utrogestan tabs with estrogel for around 9 months now and I think it is proving generally beneficial, making me feel better, etc.

I usually get a 'period' or bleed towards the end of taking utrogestan for 12 days or a few days after taking it. Anyway, I'm wondering whether it would be harmful to skip the utrogestan for a month (or delay taking it by a couple of weeks) to avoid having the bleed on holiday? Only for one month, then back to the usual routine.

Any thoughts? Has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Delay. Extend the cycle to 6 weeks or whatever and then take it so you bleed when back home. Be aware that if you normally bleed heavily you could get some breakthrough spotting by extending the cycle, but unlikely.

Thanks @JinglingHellsBells I think I'll give that a go.

Ooh I need to hijack your thread please as I am in similar boat - I am only about 6 weeks in and about to start round three of 2 weeks of utrogestan on cyclical basis.
Last month my 'period' came before the end of the utrogestan and I am going to be on holiday at the same stage of cycle this time - anything I can do to avoid a holiday period would be miraculous - is this likely to work ?

Some types of HRT such as Tridestra (tablets) are a 3-month cycle. This means 1 bleed per 3 months. It's most suitable for women in peri who have few periods of their own.

So......going slightly longer with a cycle is not that risky, as many normal cycles in peri are longer than 4 weeks anyway.

I'm not saying this is something to do all of the time, but you can extend the estrogen part a little , or even start progesterone earlier to get the bleed out of the way.

I am not an expert but I do know you should not use unopposed oestrogen unless you have had a hysterectomy. You should probably take the utrogestan as prescribed to ensure you are getting the right balance of progesterone to oestrogen to protect your endometrium.

@JinglingHellsBells @Shinyandnew2022 @Mouth early in my HRT journey I am just finishing my second 14 days of Utrogest. After the first 14 days i got my period the next day. When i started the next 14 days of utrogest, i then got my period 7 days into taking the utrogest. i am just about to stop taking the utrogest again(as its now day 13 of taking it) and want to know how to regulate the bleed so i only get the breakthrough when stopping the progesterone? do i start my utrogestan early - so the current menstrual cycle is day 8 - so to start the utrogestan on day 15 of this cycle? thanks for any help

Your bleeds seem to be all over the place if you started bleeding by day 7 on one cycle. My suggestion is that you take the Utrogestan on the same day each month and ignore the bleeds as they seem erratic.
You need to try to reset a new cycle. Why not wait until 1 September for 12 days, then 1 October for 12 days?

You don't need 14 days. The patient leaflet says 12. That is enough.

@JinglingHellsBells thanks for the info - posted on this thread as also travelling in September and am in a dilemma as really don’t want a period..should I delay starting utrogestan this cycle - anyone know if would it matter if I started it a week late ? My GP is useless - any tips anyone?

Shinyandnew2022 · 30/08/2022 10:29

Hi @Nici32 I may be too late to be of help but on the back of this thread I delayed my restarting Utrogestan by two weeks in the hope of avoiding a holiday period and it seems to have worked ok - the bleed has come a week into taking it after I got home.

Nici32 · 30/08/2022 12:25

@Shinyandnew2022 Thank you- just don’t know what to do-have previously taken norethisterone to delay cycle when I had regular periods which always worked successfully so may start this instead of utrogestan! Any other ideas welcome!

@Nici32The advice is the same as I posted for the OP.
