Nausea

Did anyone else suffer from nausea during the perimenopause? Sometimes I have nausea for about a week before my period starts, it's really getting me down. Just wondered if anyone had experience and found a remedy that actually worked??

Hi whatabanana

I had nausea a lot in perimenopause. I can't remember which stage of the cycle was worse for it though.

I assumed it was hormone levels being all over the place and it made sense to me .
I wasn't ever sick but it was a constant background feeling and a bit alarming when it first happened. I think it was a symptom of early peri for me .
It faded away eventually .

It wasn't on the lists of common symptoms which was annoying but when they produced the revised list it was on it.

Thanks for telling me about your experience. I have made a doctor's appointment just in case but I am not very optimistic there will be anything to help. Good to hear that it might fade away in time. It's definitely not the kind of nausea that would make me sick but it leaves me feeling really horrible and debilitated!

Yes , debilitating was how it felt. I was still working and looking after a family through it all - like all peri women I suppose.
Just one thing OP I don't want to alarm you but my GP immediately did blood tests. All was normal.

I've since heard from other women that they also had nausea as a symptom. It's not common but it's definitely not unheard of . And it does make sense. In fact nausea and fatigue were probably my main symptoms.

I'm post menopause now, don't take any medication and feel very well.
Good luck

Ps I have no real advice apart from the usual ginger , don't go hours between meals etc - but I did find icy cold water helped me . I'd freeze a half full bottle of water and top it up with water once frozen and carry it around with me .

Whatabanana · 29/07/2022 23:39

Thanks for the icy water tip, worth a try. Am lying in bed feeling miserable for myself. It should ease when my period starts but that in itself is an uncertainty now of course. I am on school holiday mode just now but can't even enjoy the time off, it would be worse to be at work but still feels so unfair that I can't enjoy my leisure time. Hope tomorrow brings some relief. Do you remember how long approx you were affected by it??

I had nausea a few times but a bit differently. Usually just before a period (24 hours), always within a hour of getting up. For me nausea is severe but short. 30 mins of intense cramps (hardly walk) retching and semi passed out (usually in the bath) plus really intense tingling in hands & feet.

My GP prescribed anti nausea tablets whilst saying there is not much known about female hormones so not much else they can do. Confused. I hardly get it now.

C0mfyChairP0se · 29/07/2022 23:52

Oh yes. I'm 52 and the weird thing is, it is just like morning sickness, used to get at 32 and 34 but here I am feeling nauseous quite often.

Whatabanana · 30/07/2022 00:06

One time my period was a couple of weeks late, I think the nausea lasted about a week (coming and going). I'm worried about it going on for days and days again. Does feel v different to pregnancy nausea for me though, stays further down. I don't really expect the gp to be able to help. They sent me a text about the pros and cons of hrt, I thought that was a bit premature considering this is my first symptom...but it sucks!!

@Whatabanana ,
I think I had 'bouts' of nausea that would be fairly constant while it was happening. These bouts lasted maybe a week, often less .
It felt like pregnancy sickness ( morning sickness really should be renamed - I had it all day for about 4/5 months ) but less strong . Sometimes a metallic taste in my mouth too
I couldn't see a pattern to it.
I remember my sister had the same thing . We would both complain of vague nausea at times .
Peppermint tea also helped when I wanted something warm.
It all just faded away and one day I realised I hadn't felt sick for ages.
The bouts would come and go over maybe a year - but I'm guessing here . I wish I'd taken better notice of time scales

Whatabanana · 30/07/2022 09:55

Thanks for the guestimate anyhow. This has been creeping up on me for a while but is definitely the worst it's been now. This morning it feels more like upper abdominal cramps/discomfort rather than nausea. Different but not any better 😒 . Can't wait to feel normal again!

Hello whatabanana, yes, I'm peri and haven't had a period since the end of last year. For the last three months, around the time that my calendar shows that I should be having a period, I'm hit by the most debilitating nausea/migraine. I know it's linked to my period as I get some pain in my ovaries, just no bleeding. My latest episode was today and I spent the whole time from 9am - 6pm just lying down not able to move. I never vomit though feel like I'm going to. The nausea has been lasting over a week each time. Feeling better now today but I can't go on like this.

I was offered HRT three years ago and refused but I think the time may have come to try it.

Whatabanana · 03/08/2022 07:48

That sounds terrible 😞. My period finally started yesterday, had to take ibuprofen for that but at least it means the nausea will be gone until next time. I do think of hrt as a last resort too, but there's only so much a person can take!

I had terrible nausea last night along with awful cold sweats - I was convinced that I must have food poisoning. Couldn’t walk and felt like I was going to pass out. Very scary. But then it just went. I’m 46 and I think hormones have been playing up for me for six years. I also have general nausea along with headaches in the day, which are both recent symptoms for me. I wish I knew what was going on!

Whatabanana · 03/08/2022 21:32

I walked to the shop the other night and felt extremely weak, it was a very weird sensation. I'm 49 so I guess I've been relatively lucky as I've only had the nausea for the last year or so (I think). No fun being a woman!!

I am glad I found this thread as at the moment having similar symptoms! I am 45, have the mirena fitted in and I think I am perimenoausal. Recently I have been feeling nauseous and it's coinciding with when my period should be due. I think it's all hormone related. I was hoping my periods would finally stop with the mirena but in a way I think some of us miss the regularity of a period !

Whatabanana · 08/08/2022 21:15

My period arriving is now a sign of nausea ending, so I definitely welcome it😬. I am really hoping the nausea fizzles away soon as it is horrifying to think I might skip a period and have nausea for a whole month instead!
