Information to take to dr. to get HRT at age 70

I was on HRT until about 10 years ago (Evorel Conti) when my dr. (locum) said i should stop taking it as it was not good to be on it too long etc.

I now feel from reading different things that it would be good for me long term with bone health, dementia etc. I have very bad insomnia and would hope that it could also help with that as it only started at menopause.

Could you point me in the right direction to argue my case with my GP if needed as I am not too sure how receptive they would be and if any particular kind is better at my age?

Thank you.

I would say you need a sympathetic doctor and to have done your reading rather than specific information. Can you ask for an appointment with the gp at your surgery with most experience in Menopause? Or if you can afford it go to a private clinic like dr Louise newson?

@superstar63

There is no age limit to using HRT and unless you had medical reasons to stop, or chose to, your original GP was wrong to stop it without giving good reason.

The British Menopause Society has a consensus statement on its website saying there is no time limit or age limit to using HRT.

They also say that if women start HRT after age 60, it should be low dose to begin with, transdermal (so that is a patch or gel + Utrogestan) to avoid the risk of blood clots (so no tablet form.)

I know you had HRT before but after a 10 year break, you'd be classed as starting again, if that makes sense.

Maybe go along and say how you feel (the insomnia etc) and any other symptoms you have. Say that you appreciate the small risks but (if this is the case!) want to get rid of your symptoms and improve bone health.

Drs can't give HRT for prevention however, unless you have existing risks or low diagnosed bone density.

As PP says you may have to go privately and the private consultants I know allow women your age and much older to use HRT.

Hope it works out for you.
