GP doesn't have to be your default first option

I recognise that I am lucky, but I wish this was available to everyone. At my GP surgery we have a practice nurse that is specialised in menopause and offers a menopause review on request. I attended and we agreed that HRT was an appropriate course of action - she asked me my opinions and if I'd researched options. I felt listened to, and between us we decided on the appropriate form of HRT and she made the recommendation to my GP who wrote the prescription.

I found out because when I got my smear, I asked the nurse who was the best doctor in the practice to approach about menopause issues. I'd asked a few years ago when I was peri-menopausal and I was turned down for HRT and given the usual talk about healthy lifestyle and potential anti-depressants, and didn't want to bother if I was going to get that again now I was post-menopausal. The smear nurse recommended her colleague as the first point of call, and even made the appointment for me there and then.

So do ask around - bloody marvellous nurses at our surgery have done a fantastic job so far!

I agree.
The nurses I know seem to have more in-depth training re menopause & HRT than GP’s.
