Very late period - perimenopause at 43?

Hi, I posted the following in general health but only got one response, I’m wondering if anyone here had similar at around this age and it was perimenopause?

My periods have always been regular, generally every 28 days though can be a day or two early or late. My period is now 11 days late this month which is very late for me.

I am very unlikely to be pregnant as I had a period last month and haven’t dtd since then (also DH has had a vasectomy so it would mean this reversing plus me bleeding during pregnancy). I have had very light spotting mid month most months for a couple of years but had tests over a year ago and they were satisfied all was well and it was just one of those things. I’ve been very irritable and have had mood swings for over a year. But no other symptoms like hot flushes.

Could this be perimenopause at this age? I’m worried about this sudden late period - they were exactly as normal up until last month.

The response given was to take a test, and I will to rule it out once I can get hold of one, though it’s very unlikely.

I was in peri menopause by 40. Then I fell pregnant at 41 and everything shuddered to a halt for a couple of years then fired right back up.

I am also 43 and I am having my periods now after two months of nothing. I was ill with the same symptoms as when I had covid during my last ovulation dates, which makes me think I must have skipped ovulation that month. The period has come exactly two months later and heavier than normal.

My mum thinks it's menopause as she also has skipped periods at this age. She was fine by the age of 47.

I have no idea, I thought they became more irregular, but wasn’t sure exactly what that meant. Thanks.

Mine first became more regular, going into peri, then became closer together until it was about every 19 days. Then I ended up anaemic so had a Mirena coil to get rid of them.

speckledleaf · 13/07/2022 07:59

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

As I haven’t been ill or anything I’d probably have expected them to change by a few days gradually then first.

Every 19 days?! 😱Glad you were able to stop them with the coil.

I finally started bleeding this morning - but after DTD last night. It seems a bit coincidental so I’m not sure if it’s post-coital bleed or my period…

All the things you mention started happening for me when I was 42 and a few more.

I think I was peri before I had DS2; v late 40s. Slightly erratic and v heavy periods, joint pain, a couple of miscarriages. Obviously all that went with pregnancy and baby at 41 and then I was fine for a while afterwards. When periods returned my body was not happy!

Started hrt far too late. Was really struggling and it's slowly got worse and I've had to increase every 3 months. Don't think I'm there yet.

WarriorN · 15/07/2022 18:14

Hrt at late 44 meant to say.

speckledleaf · 16/07/2022 17:40

Thanks for sharing.

Bleeding stopped after 24hrs so I don’t think it’s my period as they’re always 5 days - it gets stranger. Unless it starts up again. I have low pelvic aches every now and again too, and I haven’t had aches like that since I was a teen.

Just wondering what happened if you went back to normal after this month?

Ive akways been regular and this month it just hasnt shown up (I'm 43), but thought it was going to as felt the same. Did pg test when a week overdue and was negative thankfully (both pregnancies showed up before period due on a test so i think a week late would definately have).

Its really botherine me. Hopefully just start of perimemopause. Wondered what others experiences were?

Sandra1984 · 10/12/2022 13:09

I started peri at 52, I’ve always been like a Swiss watch then periods started spacing out and I would get them every month and a half, or sometimes every two weeks.

Hangupsrus · 10/12/2022 13:21

I started with peri around 37 with mood swings and erratic periods, so it's entirely plausible that's what it is. I had blood tests but they weren't exactly helpful as they show different results depending on where you are in the month. I didn't have hot flashes or sweats, and since going on the mini pill things have settled and I don't have periods at all.

speckledleaf · 10/12/2022 17:43

Hi,

I haven’t had any really late periods again but I’ve had another strange thing going on. I get my period around the right time, but then it stops after a day. After 12 hours or so I end up aching like I did when I was a teen - it’s painful. It’s like it’s building up and something’s blocking the way. If I massage my pelvic area then it eventually restarts, but gushes out as though it has been building up (sorry for tmi).

I’ve never had this in all my years of periods but it’s now happened a few times since my original post. I couldn’t find much on the internet other than one article that mentions it. The article says it can be endometrial tissue blocking the way, and that it isn’t worrying, but I am concerned that it’s happened a few times recently and is a new thing for me. I really should see a GP I guess but that’s not easy at the moment.

Just re read the thread and noticed I first had this in July, after the very late period.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thank you for responding. It's all so wierd. Might do another pg test tomorrow just to be sure, but soooo worried that it will positive that I've been putting it off. So wierd after being so regular that it's really freaking me out. I had period like cramps today so

Thats odd about the one day period thing, maybe trip to doctors would put your mind at ease?

aSpanielintheworks · 11/12/2022 08:56

Mine got to the point where they were so close together I was on more often than I wasn't, very heavy and clotty, and I had to take progesterone to stop one a couple of times when it just wouldn't come to an end. I had a scan to check there was nothing more going on. Then, when I was 44 I suddenly didn't have a period for 8 months. One more random one, then nothing. I'm 49 now.
So in answer to your question no it's not too early, but if you've been regular up till now without any changes to your cycle, I'd say probably not.

aSpanielintheworks · 11/12/2022 08:59

Sorry I've just seen your update - could it be a fibroid?
