peri-menopausal and considering HRT as my moods are starting to bother me. I can’t take oestrogen due to focal migraines which I’ve had since teens, anyone else in this position and is there any hrt I can have. Waiting for referral to menopause clinic but want to do my own research

I got told the same, but the helpful link posted by Sitdownifyoulike looks like we can do it?! So I'm going back to the GP!

Rupertpenrysmistress · 01/07/2022 22:30

Hi I get focal migraines and am currently on HRT patches, safe for migraine sufferers. My GP was well educated in this. Have a look at the migraine association website.

Miathecat · 02/07/2022 09:48

Thankyou that’s really useful info, I’m also allergic to any glue etc on my skin so I’m guessing patches won’t work for me but didn’t even know about gels and sprays.

I was given HRT to treat migraines.
Worked brilliantly. Hadn't put two and two together and realised peri-menopause was worsening my migraines, even though they'd always been quite linked with hormones.
I have Evorel Sequi patches and Topiramate tablets for migraine.

AnnaMagnani · 02/07/2022 10:01

How allergic to the glue on patches? May be worth a try given technology has changed.

I prescribe a lot of patches (not HRT) and do not come across allergies anymore. Used to in the past.

Miathecat · 02/07/2022 10:09

I’m allergic to glue on plasters (even hypo allergic ones) also tried one of those deep heat patches once and only lasted 5 mins before the rash started. I’ve ended up on antibiotics from a plaster once so a bit anxious but sounds like the hrt patch might be different thank you

I actually don’t get migraines very often (can be once a year) but I can lose my eyesight completely, can’t remember my family’s names, can’t send a signal to my hand to pick something up etc (so basically similar to a stroke) and was told I would never be able to have HRT but it sounds like things have moved on in terms of HRT and although I’m a few years peri (had a period after a year so still classed as peri) I can feel my moods getting worse and really need to consider HRT

Well you only find out by trying. It's not a promising start but all you have to lose is the prescription fee! Deep Heat is probably not a fair comparison either as it has the irritant chemicals to cause the heat.

Miathecat · 02/07/2022 10:18

In Scotland so don’t even have prescription fee to lose! My doctor says he’s out of his depth so has asked for a referral to menopause clinic so hopefully I get an appointment soon, thanks for everyone’s help it definitely feels more encouraging

I get migraines with aura and hemiplegic migraines and am ok with oestrogen patches. I am also allergic to plasters and painkilling patches but was ok with the evorel patches (think I'm allergic to the stronger patches I've just been moved to)

Oestrogen is ok, but the progesterone part of cycle triggers migraines so trying vaginal progesterone to see if it is any better. This fails I'm going to give up and try and tough it out, I Ann getting such odd dreams and barely sleeping as it is after a week on the 75mg oestrogen

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 02/07/2022 10:21

I also lose my vision/use of arms/speech

Miathecat · 02/07/2022 10:27

Thanks for that info, I really don’t want anything that will trigger a migraine I hate them they’re really scary. I’m definitely better informed now thanks to this thread. I’ve been coping really well so far I’ve been taking menopause support (herbal) for about three years which is when the night sweats started etc but my mood is definitely Changing I feel like I did when I had my kids and my hormones really affected my mood and I’m becoming snappy and irrational

I get migraines and am peri - it has definitely made the migraines a lot worse. Thankfully no mood changes but the sweats have started.

I'm not considering HRT at the minute but paying for Botox has been a godsend for the migraine.

Unfortunately, perimenopause and early menopause are still largely underinvesttigated, but there is data emerging. Some studies show that high intake through diet of vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene contained in the fruits and vegetables can have a positive effect. How it works is not entirely clear, but it appears to be related to the antioxidant effects of those nutrients and vitamins.
Functional and Integrated Medicine approaches have shown fantastic results because they focus on all factors at play in the patients health.

Hi, I get menstrual migraines, and recently started getting horrible symptoms such as overwhelming tiredness, feeling sad and tearful and shaking so I started taking oestrogen about 5 days ago. Today I have an awful migraine and now don’t know what to do. Should I keep taking it or not? I am coming to the end of 5 years for my mirena coil and am waiting to have a new one in a few weeks, so am probably low on progesterone. Had anyone else had problems?
