Thickened womb - mirena coil

AuntMargo · 12/06/2022 18:37

After 5 years of no periods, I started to bleed. Drs and hospital have been great. In the matter of weeks, I have been seen, scanned, and have a date for polyps to be removed, and then the coil fitted at the same time for the thickened womb. Any one else had similar and was offered an hysterectomy instead. I am supposed to be having 3 monthly biopsies after the coil has been fitted. I am 56 and it seems a bit late in life to be starting with a coil

The coil keeps the lining thin apparently. I have just had one fitted as utrogestan wasn't working for me and hysterectomy wasn't favoured by the gynaecologists. I am hoping it does the job.

Hope all goes well.

I had the same thing. Coil fitted at 53 years old due to 13.8mm thickened lining. Wasn’t on the pill when younger so have been a bit nervous doing this at my age but I’ve kind of put my faith in the Docs 🤞 On the check up they couldn’t see it so have to try again. With menopause, no kids and a slightly prolapsed uterus, I find any sized speculum really painful 🙈

@AuntMargo Do you mean you want a hysterectomy or they offered you one?

The guidelines issued by the RCOG state that for hyperplasia without any pre-cancerous changes, the treatment is the Mirena coil or 6 months of the drug Norethisterone.

With the Mirena, it can be left there for a few years and once your biopsies show all is well, you can forget about it all for a long time.

Hysterectomies are avoided whenever possible now because it's a major operation with risks of the GA and in rare cases there can be damage to the bladder or bowel and later on vaginal prolapse.

It's good really that things have changed, as years ago they whip out wombs at the drop of a hat.

I think part of me would have preferred the hysterectomy but they don’t want to. Just read all the horror stories about the coil and link to breast cancer🙄

Just read all the horror stories about the coil and link to breast cancer

stories about the Mirena and BC?

Where have you read this?

I think you have made a mistake.

I had Mirena fitted at 52 as unusual bleeding and thickened lining and have to say I feel better with coil than on utrogestron

Runaround50 · 27/07/2022 10:17

@roundandrounditgoes1234 is your mood okay with the coil?

I had one fitted at the end of May.
My moods are all over the place and I don't know if the coil is causing this or lack of oestrogen still. I've got a patch for oestrogen, but how much I'm absorbing, I don't know.
A blood test would show that I expect ?

Utrogestan my didn't control my bleeding at all, hence the coil.

roundandrounditgoes1234 · 27/07/2022 10:20

Hi @Runaround50 my mood is better with the coil than utrogestron, i felt very flat on the days i took utrogestron like you i had no choice but to swap, but saying that in general even on hrt and coil i'm not my old self but i'm better than i am without coil and sandrema ! Hope it helps you a little

Runaround50 · 27/07/2022 10:25

@roundandrounditgoes1234 thanks for replying.

Yes this is the issue. I think my mood was okay on utrogestan, but I feel quite flat now.

Again, don't know if it's the coil or patch not working. I'm thinking maybe the oestrogen isn't right as my heart palpitations and anxiety are surfacing again.

Really have to try and make the coil work as utrogestan did nothing. Unless I can try a different progesterone. They say that coil takes a few months to settle anyway, don't they?

roundandrounditgoes1234 · 27/07/2022 11:51

@Runaround50 its hard to tell i think what is due to menopause and whats due to life, my anxiety and mood in the last 5 years has been terrible but i know when i had 2 weeks off HRT it was worse. Maybe worth looking at the oestrogen part, i take 2 x 1g sachets of sandrema each day, which for first year was only 1 sachet, upping it definately helped. I also take a host of other vits including ashwangada and magnesium rhodiola for anxiety. My biggest symptom recently is the need to wee all the time! good luck, i'm 53.

Runaround50 · 27/07/2022 12:01

@roundandrounditgoes1234 thanks again, I appreciate it.

I'm 51 and constantly evaluating my life! Maybe that's more the issue.

I can feel the anxiety lurking again. At one point I could barely drive. That got better, but these last few days, it's back again!

I'm on a 75 patch and wondering if it's bring absorbed properly.

I also need to keep weeing, despite using Ovestin and vagifem daily.

God I'm sick of it all. I may look at the vitamins etc also.

Thanks again.

Runaround50 · 27/07/2022 12:03

P.s @roundandrounditgoes1234 where do you apply your sandrena for maximum absorption?

roundandrounditgoes1234 · 27/07/2022 12:07

@Runaround50 on my thighs 1 sachet on each
I take the magnesium rhodiola in AM and ashwangada before bed with magnesuim, zinc and calcium supplement .
Weeing a big issue!
I also take Vit B complex, omega and Vit D - i'm rattling like a pill bottle!!

Runaround50 · 27/07/2022 12:15

Yes that's a lot of vitamins! 😀
The wee thing could be atrophy of vagina? Once the walls become thin, everything seems to break down and the bladder becomes affected. Do you use vagifem or Ovestin cream?

Okay, well Hrt doc is ringing later. Got to decide whether to stay with patch or change to sandrena.
