Did you experience menopause same age as your mother?

They say often women will follow a similar pattern, timing wise, as their mother in regards to perimenopause / menopause.

Did you?

Asking as my mother was early in Menopause - 45 and I'm now 38 and wondering if I'm peri menopausal.

My DM was 52.
I'm 51 and experiencing symptoms, so yes (ish)

fantasmasgoria1 · 23/05/2022 17:29

My mother was 53 and I have over the last few months started with the peri at 47.

JinglingHellsBells · 23/05/2022 17:40

I had 2 friends whose mums had early menopause (before 40) but my friends were 'normal' - late 40s/ early 50s.

So, it doesn't always follow.

You need to keep an eye on yourself as nowadays compared to when your mum was younger, early menopause is classed as before 50 and use of HRT is suggested (for bone health) in women who are post menopause by 45.

Mine, my mum's and gran's were all over 50.

Thanks

I did read of the new research and approach and for those who start very early so I am keen to be on the ball with it. Have booked a private Gynaecology appt as I'm quite concerned as my periods have been really off, I'm currently experiencing either a very long on and off period or 2 periods only a week apart (an 11 day cycle) etc. i've also had lots of other issues recently around flow, pain, indigestion.. etc.
So thought best to get checked out properly.
Could be covid related, perimenopause, could be stress, or could be hangover from a MC last year, hopefully nothing else more sinister

No idea...she had a hysterectomy in her early 40s....25 years later and she is still talking about her menopause and the symptoms....

I'm nearly 50 now and haven't a clue where i am at....no hot flushes...no sign of periods stopping or getting lighter...

Just fecking fed up waiting for some concrete sign of something!

lljkk · 23/05/2022 22:29

Dunno, can't remember her being specific about it. Suspect I'm older.

Quornflakegirl · 23/05/2022 22:30

My dm was 55 and I started peri menopause early at 38.

VeryQuaintIrene · 23/05/2022 22:31

My mum had hers in her 40s and mine was early 50s, but both of us were lucky enough to have exactly the same kind of easy menopause.

Thejoyfulstar · 23/05/2022 22:33

My mum started the menopause really early. Think her last period was when she was 42 and she had been perimenopausal for a few years before that. I'm 40 later this year and just had a baby (conceived 2nd month ttc) and had very regular periods before then. Still haven't had a period as im breastfeeding but was expecting to have started peri by now. Will see what happens when I stop breastfeeding.

theremustonlybeone · 23/05/2022 22:36

my mother started in her mid 40s, I didn’t experience anything until around 49 with super heavy periods. I am 52 and apart from no periods now which is bliss I have zero other symptoms. So I am waiting for the full on to commence

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 23/05/2022 22:38

No my mum breezed through it early 50's...l was 38 and had hot flushes, dry vag, brain fog etc etc

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2022 22:45

DM had a hysterectomy at 44, she'd always had awful trouble with her periods. I never had problems with mine, but was definitely perimenopausal at 44 with my regular cycle changing to erratic and heavy periods. I got a Mirena coil put in at 46 and never had another period, so I don't actually know when I went through menopause. Which is kind of weird, and annoying when medical professionals ask you when and you look like an idiot for saying you don't know...

Anyway, I digress - short answer is that I'm not sure if my menopause was at a different age to DM's. We did both have a relatively easy time of it though, compared to some women.

ItisallPooh · 23/05/2022 23:03

My mum went through menopause because of cancer treatment in her early 40s. She hadn't had symptoms before that and had a pretty easy menopause experience. I'm really hoping that I don't get many symptoms either. I'm definitely seeing my periods becoming a bit erratic and I'm 43. Not quite as clockwork as they were.

MoiraQueen · 24/05/2022 06:18

My Mum's periods had stopped by the time she was 45, I'm 53 this year and still have them.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 24/05/2022 06:27

I started at 34 and she was done by 40. I don't know any of the finer details.

easyday · 24/05/2022 06:41

No. My mother started early 50s and ended up having hysterectomy due to cancer. I didn't start until about 56, done at 58 luckily no symptoms other than increasingly long gaps between periods. I started my periods at 11, earlier then her but I was very tall (therefore heavier) for my age. I have two sisters and I believe they also were later than my mother.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/05/2022 06:51

No

Mother - 32
Me - 51, still having regular periods

OddsandSods · 24/05/2022 07:05

Not really

mum and her sister both 40
me almost done (menses every 4-6 months) 49 (became irregular age 47)

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 24/05/2022 07:09

Yes, at 47 !

Yamyam13 · 24/05/2022 07:30

Thanks for all the replies. Such a mix, it seems like it's definitely not necessarily like mother like daughter.

Interesting to hear how many people didnt experience many symptoms either. It's so good that Menopause is being spoken about more freely these days, but it is a bit terrifying at the same time as lots of the negative aspects being spoken about a lot, so it's good to hear that some people breeze through it too.

My mum and I had very different experiences of periods, fertility etc so perhaps thats a sign we're different in the ovary, uterus & hormone dept!

My mum started at 39. I started at around 44. Just been prescribed HRT.

Clymene · 24/05/2022 17:07

Not at all. My mum had an early menopause and I was still having babies in my 40s.

augustusglupe · 27/05/2022 23:56

No, my mum had her menopause in her early 40s. I was 51.

BonjourCrisette · 28/05/2022 00:23

Mother 53, me 51, so fairly similar. I presume there may have been some genetic influence from my dad's side, too.
