How did you ask GP for testosterone?

I’m 47 and feel way too young to have zero libido. I really want to see if testosterone can help even just a little bit but I feel awkward and even a bit ashamed to approach my GP about this. I’m just not sure the best way to approach it and would really like some advice please.

What Difference did it make to you @BatshitCrazyWoman

I'm stronger, have more stamina, and feel like I think more clearly. My libido was good before, I don't think it's done anything there (I didn't need it to!)

It's muscular-skeletal issues I really would appreciate seeing if it helps with. Libido has only recently gone so it may improve once current oestrogen levels improve. I'm going to give this current patch a good couple of months then may try privately.

Icantdoitagain · 05/11/2022 17:24

@WarriorN just wondered how you have got on .... I've been on Evorel Sequi patches since The beginning off the year... increased to 100 via extra Evorel in April but have noticed a slide back to aching joints and muscles, lack of energy and poor sleep.

I was also interested in whether testosterone might help?

WarriorN · 05/11/2022 17:54

Hi, I went up to 100 about 6 weeks ago after trying 87.5 for 6 weeks. (Was having issues when I went up 25).

On 75 my oestrogen was still not great (260 iirc) and I still had vaginal issues. That's improved hugely just lately but im still having aches and pains, tiredness etc. im getting the occasional bit libido of returning but still not great. I seem to have a random couple of days every few weeks where I feel great but then it dips. So I wonder if there's occasional bursts of testosterone.

I'm probably going to give this a good 3 more months and then ask Gp for next steps.

Instead of Newson, Bupa health seems to be good and cheaper. But im hoping Gp will be helpful

I’m going to have to approach my GP practice too. They do have e-Consult now, so I can at least write it all down sensibly based on this thread, rather than waffle miserably on the phone.

Dogsgottabone · 06/11/2022 06:41

@AutumnCrow our econsult has a word limit, so you might need to be clever at writing the message!

Alternatively I managed to find my GP email address. They don't chat to you on it unless they need to send you some info, but you can use it to send them documents eg. I sent them some outcomes from private treatment I recently had. So maybe try to find that and you can send them the info to go alongside the econsult.

I've had an idea, @Dogsgottabone - you can upload photos on e-Consult so I could use that to upload screenshots/scans of the guidance from NICE and the British Menopause Society? Not a massive screen-dump of text, just the main bits, with the site links.

Then I can use the text boxes to state my symptoms, where I am with HRT (years into it it), why I think testosterone could help me, my understanding of its off-licence use for women etc.

I'm a pretty low ebb tbh, so I have nothing to lose now.

Dogsgottabone · 06/11/2022 07:26

@AutumnCrow genius, I hadn't thought of that!!

Evanted76 · 06/11/2022 08:30

My GP has just prescribed me testosterone but in sachets.

I approached the subject with her due to fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog and a non existent libido.
I had a full hysterectomy in 2019 so im taking oestrogen only.

She sent me for a blood test first to check my testosterone levels. The results indicated there was zero amounts of testosterone in my body so she was happy to prescribe off licence.

The problem I've got is I've approached about five different pharmacies with my prescription and it's out of stock or unavailable everywhere!

Icantdoitagain · 21/11/2022 19:12

Had a phone appt with Gp to ask about options said it sounds like need higher doses etc but as I'm already on Evorel Sequi plus additional Evorel 50 would prefer to get some further advice - going to refer me to clinic - says should take 7-8 weeks so will carry on as is for now ...

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 21/11/2022 19:16

Needed to change my HRT as Mirena was coming to an end.

Me: I'm feeling very flat and my libido is zilch. Can I try testosterone?
GP: We need to try more oestrogen first; also need to understand it's off licence etc etc. Try new prescription and see you in a couple of months
< double my oestrogen and switch to capsules for progesterone>
Me: Mood much better but still no libido
GP: your prescription will be at the pharmacy asap
Me three weeks later: WOW.
