Melatonin gummy anyone?

Furryfeet · 11/05/2022 20:39

Does anyone take any form of melatonin supplement for sleep? I was offered some Circadin by a relative, but I realise I can't be taking this sort of medication regularly. I believe some people swear by various melatonin supplements so wondered if there are any mild enough to take regularly, or do they induce an unhealthy build up of hormone? Usually I'm all about the holistic sleep solutions but curious about this since it seems that low melatonin is a thing at this time of life (and my dreadful insomnia laughs in the face of regular bedtimes, low lighting and warm milky drinks!!)

Taurine is supposed to help melatonin

.... this research is on flies 🐜 but it's why they add it to red bull!

Ulitmately hrt helped my insomnia.

I was getting hot flushes by then though and none of the supplements were helping anymore

GeminiTwin · 12/05/2022 21:20

It did nothing for me. I was prescribed it at a higher strength. The only things that help me are antihistamines, nytol one a night, not the herbal one, helps me.

Herani · 13/05/2022 09:01

HRT is making me stay asleep better, but not get to sleep better. Natural supplements just weren't cutting it, so I'm now using a half or full dose of Night Nurse that seems to do the trick and switch off the bloating/period pains my ultrogestan is causing.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 13/05/2022 14:40

I've used melatonin for years, gummies, tablets, liquid. There's no doubt they helped a great deal at first but I've either built up a tolerance for them or my perimenopausal body is so resistant to sleep that it ignores them! I still use them on the off chance they will help but generally resort to antihistamines when I'm desperate for sleep.

Furryfeet · 14/05/2022 14:57

@WarriorNewAgain I bought some taurine at your suggestion. Used it last night with positive results (although I know one swallow doesn't make a summer!)😂

The trick to melatonin is to not take it all the time if you do it stops working

WarriorNewAgain · 14/05/2022 15:11

Furry I do think it works well - no idea if the effect wears off or not but I think it works on GABA which is something to do with general stress.

I know ashwanga eventually wears off. I found once I got into a routine with taurine I was a better sleeper and then was able to stop. Stress definitely affects my peri symptoms. In fact, I can see why they offer anti depressants for peri and for some it may work who can't take hrt (I believe seroxat is effective for hot flushes.) interestingly for me, I noticed some mild side affected from the hrt within the first few weeks that were similar to when I started antidepressants once, namely weird, disturbing and vivid dreams. Only lasted a week though. Gut is the other thing to look at. Porridge for example helps certain good bacteria known to help with sleep. There's and expensive prebiotic that claims to work in a week due to similarly supporting the gut. (Bimuno I think?)

Sorry for bliddy lack of paragraphs! Site issue for iOS.

I take melatonin because it's good for me - I've been taking it for 18months - 3mg a night - I fall asleep within 30 minutes of taking it

It does NOT prevent the hideous early morning waking after 4-5 hours Hmm - it just gets me off to sleep quickly

I get it from Piping rock and it's REALLY cheap - like a tenner for a years worth

Furryfeet · 14/05/2022 15:53

Good points. I think it’s so tempting to lump everything under the peri heading but managing stress is important too. I think the post lockdown world is a tough one to navigate alongside peri menopause

Have you tried magnesium for sleep? Amazon has gummies. Made a huge difference to me.

Runaround50 · 30/05/2022 20:49

Which do you take @CherryMaple ? Could you post a link please? Thanks

EggRollsForever · 30/05/2022 22:46

I have melatonin from the USA and use one most nights as I stress and can't get to sleep. I find it kicks in after about 20 mins. I usually take the 10mg or half of one.

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/05/2022 22:56

I only take melatonin occasionally as your body gets used to it so it becomes less effective. When I do take it, I take 10mg timed release so it helps me stay asleep as well as fall asleep. Less than 10mg does nothing. (Neither does Nytol - something has to be STRONG to stand a chance of working on me).

I find the most effective pill for sleep is anti-histamines. But again your body builds up a tolerance so you can't take them all the time.

My sleep was bad before peri-menopause. But now it's so much worse. The only think that truly helped long term has been getting long Covid but that's not something I'd recommend!

Nat6999 · 30/05/2022 23:04

I take melatonin that I buy from Piping Rock, I'm autistic & don't sleep that well.

CherryMaple · 30/05/2022 23:41

Hi @Runaround50 I take Novomins magnesium gummies. Have really improved my sleep. Also great for stress, anxiety, etc. Would really recommend.

Runaround50 · 31/05/2022 14:41

Thanks @CherryMaple I've just bought some of those gummies today.
Fingers crossed they do something!

HRT was the only thing that reliably worked for my insomnia. I plan to stay on it for a long time.

MissyB1 · 31/05/2022 14:52

@HundredMilesAnHour can you buy those? Or do they need prescription?

I buy them in the US (and even there you sometimes have to search out the timed release one but it's worth the effort).

You used to be able to get it shipped to the UK (by iHerb etc) but that was stopped following Brexit unfortunately. Brexit has a lot to answer for.

Me too but 5-10mg. I've taken it for years and still find it effective for helping me fall asleep.
