What can I expect after menopause?

Peri menopause is awful for me. Lots of symptoms, HRT is helping a lot. However, it doesn’t help completely. My most difficult symptom of extreme tiredness is probably 60% better with HRT so I’m able to work and function now, but I can’t do what I used to do. What can I expect after menopause? Will I always be exhausted or will that go after menopause? What about other symptoms? Thanks.

Same here. Will be interested to know what to expect as well.

I got much better. Better sleep, more energy, no anxiety, no strange aches and pains. But I look a lot older. No HRT.

I'm 50 and have hit the menopause. Just want to die, to be honest. I've always suffered with depression, never pmt. This is horrendous. No sweats, but aching bones, memory loss, acne, blepharitis, low iron etc. At least 30 symptoms but the worst is the anger and hate. I mean real anger. Gp prescribed hrt but theres a history of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease in my family. I have had a few high bp readings so am rather scared to take it. It's a nightmare trying to get phone appt with gp, next available is in 4 weeks!
This week my 17 year old daughter moved into my parents as we had an almighty row, I'm single so no partner to upset, told my ageing parents I will never speak to them again and i hope they die soon, said they disgust me and had a huge disagreement with the neighbours. I'm scared and don't know what to do. Can't stop secretly crying. What makes it worse is when mother went through menopause she constantly tells me it was easy and it's all in the mind!!

I had a Mirena coil due to heavy, frequent periods causing low ferritin. An unexpected side effect is that my rage has gone.

Sarah, you MUST try to access some help.
Modern HRT is very safe, transdermal, even more so .

Start your HRT. You may find you feel calmer over time.

What has your GP prescribed?

Sarah121617 · 29/05/2022 15:39

Hi, Thank you. I was prescribed Estradiol 1mg/Norethisterone acetate 500 mcg. I'm just so wary about the risks with my fathers stroke, heart and diabetes issues. I'm my only childrens parent. I feel like I'm going mad most of the time and am struggling to find the strength to keep going. I know gps probably don't do it on purpose but when I speak to them I feel as though I'm wasting there time. Consults feel so rushed and impersonal now they are over the phone. I barely leave the house unless to go food shopping or pick kids up. I really am irrelevant.

There is no 'after menopause' @Botherfreedays ! Menopause means literally no more periods. before that, it's peri menopause. Afterwards, all women are menopausal for life.

If you are on HRT, you can continue for life. If you stop, for whatever reason(and it's your choice unless there are medical reasons to) you may feel fine and like your old self, or you may decide to go back to HRT.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 29/05/2022 16:14

I've just carried on with HRT - in fact, I've 'improved' my HRT adding in testosterone and got my libido and oomph back. I'm 63. You'll have to prise my HRT out of my cold dead hands, I'm ever giving it up

@Sarah121617 Try doing some reading about HRT. It actually protects against heart disease as long as it's started within 10 years of the last period. It prevents the arteries furring up and keeps them supple.

Heart disease was the biggest killer in the UK (dementia has just taken over) so almost everyone has a parent who has it. That doesn't mean you will!

Here is a video you may find useful- scroll down to the one on cardio vascular health.

Prof John Stevenson, Consultant Metabolic Physician, Royal Brompton Hospital, Trustee – British Menopause Society, answers these FAQs: What is CHD? How can I reduce my risk for CHD? Does HRT affect CHD? I am at high risk for CHD, is it safe for me to take HRT? What type of HRT should I take? I have a history of high blood pressure, is it safe for me to take HRT?
