Really interesting and relatable.

Is this the show from last year being reshown? If so I watched it previously and it was brilliant.
it should be compulsory viewing for all —both males and females!

Meltinthemiddle · 02/05/2022 21:50

No I think it's a follow on going more in depth about peri menopausal and the impact on the mind and body.

It’s new, a follow up to the previous one.

I’m watching and sobbing through most of it. Almost 41, finally out 2+2 together about 6 months ago and realised I’ve been Peri for a few years. Currently on a waiting list for the Mirena coil and trying to psych myself up to going back to the GP to talk HRT.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 02/05/2022 21:55

watching it with DH, he’s taking bites to go to work with and suddenly it’s like his brain has pinged and he understands where I’ve been.

I’m feeling weepy and think this should be mandatory viewing.

Ive never been a Davina fan, but I have huge respect for her pushing this issue and helping so many people “get it”.

Gherkingreen · 02/05/2022 21:56

The bit about the impact of estrogen on brain function was a big moment for me.
I'm 47 and feeling like I'm getting some perimenopausal symptoms (much hotter than usual at night/occasional tinnitus/brain fog/more tired than usual/pain when ovulating) but holding off making a GP appt because of the HRT shortages and the pressures on GP appts.

How do you know what level/mix of HRT to take? Is it all guess work? How do you know what levels of estrogen/testosterone etc are right for you personally?

Meltinthemiddle · 02/05/2022 21:56

Interesting about taking HRT as soon as you have symptoms. Do you know of you can take HRT with the coil?

Just about to watch on +1

TheDogsMother · 02/05/2022 21:59

DH is looking a bit shocked and I'm quite angry that I could have been cutting my risk of motor neurone, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and MS if only I had started sooner. Women should be contacted as a matter of course when they get to 45 rather than it being such a complete lottery.

They often seem to recommend the coil (Mirena) in Peri as it works to both give progesterone and birth control for women who are still fertile.

samsmum2 · 02/05/2022 22:00

Yep, watching it with my husband. Important for him to understand as well I felt!

Yes I believe the Mirena coil serves as the Progesterone which you would have with the Estrogen.

MarshaBradyo · 02/05/2022 22:01

I’ll watch it later

Like the pp I’d like to know how you know what is best - could someone pls talk through what a GP appointment is like in terms of why you’d get x brand over y?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/05/2022 22:02

Watching, and it made me bite the bullet and do an e-consult about HRT, which I have been dithering about for months.

Gherkingreen · 02/05/2022 22:03

I wouldn't want the Mirena coil as have had two previously (as birth control between and after DCs) but I had awful mood swings and bad skin, which improved/disappeared after I had the coil removed.

With me we had a comprehensive phone call speaking about choices if you have ovaries or don't, if you have a coil or don't, whether you would prefer patches or gel. I was offered the option of having the Mirena coil for the progesterone part but never having had a coil before I didn't real want to start now, so opted for pills. It's very thorough.

Ohilovetorave · 02/05/2022 22:05

Davina is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Such an important programme along with the first one.

grafittiartist · 02/05/2022 22:08

I am so glad she did this. I'm not really there yet- but recognises some of what she says.

I've responded to another thread re the process I went through recently. In addition to this they started me on a very safe entry level and will just tweak from there if needed.

SpindleInTheWind · 02/05/2022 22:11

I'm going to watch this tomorrow. I have endless struggles with my GP practice over HRT, despite the fact that I have had my ovaries surgically removed and a total hysterectomy, which wasn't done for a bloody laugh.

My current GP is an absolute disgrace.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 02/05/2022 22:11

Am v weepy now, it was totally relatable on many levels. I had a total hysterectomy last year and while I felt better from the previous problems being literally removed, it's replaced them with different ones. HRT is not yet my miracle but I'm hopeful it will be.

Longcovid21 · 02/05/2022 22:12

Very interesting programme. Explains my low mood and overwhelming feelings when looking after demanding children. I definitely need to put measures in place going forward. I'm not going the hrt route but definitely diet, exercise and homeopathic remedies and stress management.

CaveMum · 02/05/2022 22:13

I know she’s not everyone’s favourite but I find Dr Louise Newson a really useful source of info.

colouringindoors · 02/05/2022 22:13

I have say I am so grateful to Davina for her work on this. It is having a massive impact for so many women.

Selkiesarereal · 02/05/2022 22:13

A really good programme, so informative but so shocked that the results of the US study isn’t widely known here.

Going to go back to the dr and not be fobbed off with antidepressants.

Lottapianos · 02/05/2022 22:14

'I’m feeling weepy and think this should be mandatory viewing.'

Same here. Found it really moving. There is such great work going on to make women's health better. Those two US scientists were amazing

Absolutely DISGRACEFUL that some women are still subject to a postcode lottery, and have to deal with incompetent GPs who try to fob them off with antidepressants
