Refused Hrt

Unforgettablefire · 29/04/2022 18:42

I mentioned earlier I’d been refused hrt and was advised to come over here I’m still finding my way around these boards and what’s here 😄
Anyway, I’m peri menopausal and have been for about 7 years (I’m 55 now)
It has got me climbing the walls you know the drill.
So I goes to the doc and asks if he’ll do bloods with a view to hrt. Was told point blank “no, we don’t give hrt because of the cancer risk” and that was that so off I went.
I’ve been seeing all good stuff since I watched the Davina thing, do you think it’s worth going and seeing another GP? I don’t want to be a nuisance or have anyone say you’ve already been told no I’d feel embarrassed.

Definitely go to another doctor, unless you have a family history that means you are particularly at risk.

HiCandles · 29/04/2022 18:53

It's quite rare that family history means you can't have HRT but if you've had some types of cancer yourself that could be why GP said no, though of course it should have been explained. If there's no particular cancer risk then it's appalling you were denied HRT. Definitely ask for another appointment, and try asking the receptionist which GP has an interest in HRT/women's health.
However you don't need bloods at 55 to diagnose perimenopause - bloods only required for younger women, or if there's a possibility it might be another cause in you eg a thyroid problem. GP should consider that and offer bloods if they feel they're needed.

Divebar2021 · 30/04/2022 00:30

I’m 51 and have just been declined HRT despite many relevant symptoms. My friend is at a different surgery and is 10 years younger and has just been prescribed HRT for similar symptoms to me. I’ve been over to her surgery and have collected the necessary forms to transfer across. ( although I appreciate they may still say no.) Any surgery that has a blanket “no” to HRT because of the cancer risk hasn’t kept up with the science and deserve to be left for that alone. They are depriving you of a myriad of health benefits that HRT offers.

DonnaSelsey · 30/04/2022 07:58

I HAVE SOME SPARE HRT- Hoping I may be able to help someone with their HRT shortage, I have an Oestrogel pump-pack probably about a third full, not great but it could help in the short term, I also have 20 Evorel 50 Estradiol Patches, both free to anyone that needs them, I have changed to a tablet so I no longer need them. Please let me know if you would like them and I will get them to you asap. I have had a hysterectomy and know how vital HRT is so only too glad to help x

Change your Doctor. They obviously have little understanding of female health.

OMG that is so ignorant and archaic. For God's sake change GPS. Some of them don't have a clue.

Anjelika · 30/04/2022 13:00

@DonnaSelsey I would be interested in the patches if they are still available.

chisanunian · 30/04/2022 13:04

Tell your GP that your symptoms have become unbearable and you therefore request a referral to see a gynaecologist at the hospital.

@DonnaSelsey the vagaries of bloody meno means I'm crying at your very kind offer.
I dont want it cos I'm on tablets too but the fact you have offered is just so lovely.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/05/2022 22:52

You need to file a complaint against this idiot and you need to go to a menopause clinic. As soon as possible.

Oblomov22 · 01/05/2022 23:00

You just need to educate yourself, watch the davina programme, look up Louise newson. Ask for a different GP and politely demand HRT, saying the other GP was archaic and not adhering to the 2015 NICE guidelines. That shows them that you are serious.

DonnaSelsey · 02/05/2022 13:07

@Terfydactyl Bless you! I hope the tablets are helping, I tried the gel & 2 different kind of patches before going private and switching to the pill and a testosterone gel, which touch wood! has been the best treatment so far. Best wishes x

comfortablyfrumpy · 02/05/2022 13:11

My GP explained that nowadays the view is that unless there are specific risks, the benefits of up to 5 years on HRT far outweigh the risks. Your GP is woefully behind the times. Perhaps worth downloading some info from the Menopause Society and making a complaint?

When I read about others' experiences I am so bloody grateful for my GP. She is an absolute rock.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/05/2022 15:02

You GP doesn't know what they're talking about. You don't need blood tests to prove anything. At your age and the symptoms you describe you should be given HRT. Change GP asap.

CaveMum · 02/05/2022 15:58

You need to arm yourself unfortunately. Go to www.balance-menopause.com and print off relevant articles, take their symptoms quiz and again print off the results. Get a copy of the NICE guidance for prescribing HRT and, yup you guessed it, print it off and take a copy with you: www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng23/resources/menopause-diagnosis-and-management-pdf-1837330217413

If all else fails find out if there are any private clinics near you, you can often get a one-time prescription for HRT from there and they’ll give you a letter to give to your GP.

catfunk · 02/05/2022 22:15

Your GP is full of shit, I'd be making a complaint and leaving them a very strong review on Google
