Estring in NHS prescription

BovrilonToast · 25/04/2022 18:34

My VA is hideous and a year of vagifem and three months of systemic HRT haven’t touched it. I’ve researched the Estring and it sounds perfect.

I asked my GP for it but she has said it’s not available on the NHS, but I can buy it privately. It is eyewateringly expensive and also having had a look at the NICE guidelines it looks like it bloody IS available on the NHS.

Can anyone confirm they’ve had it on NHS prescription please?

It will depend on your local prescribing guidelines whether it's black or red listed. In my area I prescribe it but I know they don't in others. I'm assuming you've tried high dose ovestin / vagifem / Vagirux / Blissell?

I tend to use it second line when your more typical topical HRT (in addition to systemic) has failed

Vulval symptoms don't tend to respond to systemic HRT and its usual to need something local on top.

Thanks @persephone19 I’ve tried vagifem every other day with ovestin at the same time. It just doesn’t seem to work for me.

My GP is pretty anti HRT so it’s been a struggle to get anything out of her at all… but I suppose I could be in the wrong area. (South east).

We use daily vagifem because every other day doesn't work for a lot of women. Can also use ovestin or Blissell daily. Outside product licence but commonly used. Definitely worth trying first.

And get a more up to date GP

My practice is dreadful for any kind of knowledge on the menopause. Unless you speak to one Dr who is part time I think you have no hope.
Thank you for your advice @persephone19 I appreciate it!
